Dieting

18th September 1999
I once read that if you are planning to do something like give up smoking or go on a diet, you should tell all your friends about it. The fact that everyone knows that you're doing it will encourage you to keep at it. Either that or all your friends will do everything they can to stop you (like always offering you cigarettes).

Well, this is to tell all my H2G2 friends that I'm going on a diet and exercise regime. I'm not telling you my target weight or dress size; I'm too ashamed of what I weigh now. What I will say is that I'm aiming to lose 50lbs by this time next year. It may not sound much, but it's 3 stone and 8 pounds of fat that's got to go in 12 months. I want to be able to fit into my wedding dress in time for my 10th anniversary.

Please send messages of encouragement and I'll keep you informed of my progress.

Attention all designers/manufacturers of women's clothing

It's sound off time again, this time about flaws women's clothing. Among my complaints:

1. Why the almost total lack of pockets? When my husband gets dressed to go to work he has at least two pockets in his trousers and five pockets in his jacket (2 hip, 1 breast and 2 inner). I'm lucky if I have two, and I only get those if I wear a jacket. More pockets in skirts, please!
2. Lack of choice of leg length in trousers. There seems to be an assumption that all women have 29 inch inside leg measurements. Mine are at least 31 inches, and with this measurement I have to wear really flat shoes. Consequently I have to buy mens trousers.
3. Lack of choice of blouse fabric. The blouses available from most department stores are made of polyester (sticky in the summer), some sort of viscose combination (creases like hell) or cotton (also creases like hell). My husband can get poly-cotton shirts, so why can't I?
4. The price of things. The last time my husband bought shirts they were about £10 from Debenhams. The last time I bought blouses they were about £20. OK, so they had some embroidery on, but you can't tell me that that costs £10 to do!
5. The lack of reasonably priced glamourous lingerie for women with large breasts. I'll admit that some manufacturers are starting to get the message here, but very few.

Please will somebody read this and take note. I'm not the only woman that gets annoyed by these things and you could make yourself some friends for life.

My first journal entry

15th June 1999 18:06 BST
This is my first journal entry and, as suggested by the powers that be at H2G2, I'm going to use it to sound off about something that bugged me today.

I had to drive to an interview this morning. During the drive several things bugged me.

1) Why do people use their cars for journeys of less than half a mile? I got stuck behind some old biddy doing less than 30mph in a 40mph zone. (I assume the driver was female; it might have been a very short man.) The driver pulled up at the village hall less than half a mile from the start point. There was nothing about the car to indicate that the driver was disabled, so I'm assuming a reasonable level of health and fitness here.
Because of this driver's dithering I got stuck behind a truck. smiley - sadface

2) Why is there no apparent rhyme or reason to the placing of speed limits? I had to drive along a long stretch (several miles) of 40mph zone, where the road conditions would have allowed 50 or even 60mph. Part of the stretch of road went through a village, where a 30mph limit would have been more appropriate.

3) Why are some drivers so inconsiderate? (One of the great questions of life, the universe and everything, this!) Today I was cut up by two drivers, one of whom proceeded to dawdle along the road at well below the speed limit. Another driver passed me in a very dangerous place.

Ideally I would like to work from home, or work about 2 miles from home. I am a software engineer with many years experience and live in Headless Cross, Redditch, England. Any offers?
