Oh, To Be Sociable!
Posted Nov 4, 2002
One thing I have discovered in my first month at university is that if you don't talk to people, you get rather lonely. Although I'd like to be talkative, I'm blatantly rather bad at any sort of verbal communication, face to face, as it were. Unless the object of the conversation is to lower the other person's opinion of me to that level that requires they never look me in the face again.
There is one girl in my English Language class I manage to see every day, but haven't once spoken to. At some point I will make the daring leap and try to strike up a conversation with her. And she too can strike me from her personal list of 'People You Can Hold a Decent Conversation With'.

It's a Sad Day When You Can't Trust Your Own Cat Not to P*ss on Your Shoes
Posted Nov 3, 2002
Well, it's a Sunday, I haven't posted a journal entry since that first one, and it just seemed like something I could do. I think they call this 'displacement activity' - I'm secretly trying not to do the work I have to do for university. Well, to that I'd say: there's nothing secret about it. I feel an enormous amount of jealousy towards those lucky people who go to uni to study a subject they're really, truly interested in, and think it's a wonderful thing to be studying their subject. Oh well.
Today has involved Latin, Greek and English Language homework and the unavoidable headache that invariably follows - even though I've only been on this course for the last three weeks. I've also been listening to a CD loaned to me by a friend, who insisted that "The Polyphonic Spree" were a band I really had to listen to. Unfortunately, their music isn't really my kind of thing. And yes, my cat did relieve himself on top of my shoes.

The First
Posted Oct 3, 2002
Hmmm... a journal, eh? I'm not sure I can actually do anything useful with this. Today I sat at home for quite a while, watched some TV episodes, including the second episode of Joss Whedon's new show "Firefly". Unusual, certainly. Very distinct amongst science fiction shows set in space because it has no aliens at all - at least so far. It also has a vaguely annoying Western-style incidental music score. Something that can be easily blocked out, though. Has potential, I feel - we'll have to wait and see how it develops.
Apart from that I had a driving lesson, which was successful in that I didn't actually hit any other road users / pedestrians / trees. Still not convinced I'm doing that well though. I get the feeling my instructor can never quite make up his mind whether to shout at me or be reassuring that "next time it'll be better".
Matriculation tomorrow at Glasgow University, so perhaps I ought to go to bed now. Yes, that may be a good idea.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
