And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they're popping up next to images quite unpredictably, yes, even on YOUR page! Whence these little boxes? Are they alms boxes? safety deposit boxes? Gift boxes? Suggestion boxes? Fuse boxes?

They are the dreaded 'file not found' box (sometimes refered to as the dreaded Red X). The PICTURE tag uses a file called blank.gif to pad the space around images (depending on how they're set, aligned etc) & that file has gone missing.

This phenomenom has only be happening the last day or so - so I'd guess that the blank.gif file didn't get moved across to the new servers - it's possibly sculling around in the bottom of Sean or Shim's backpack. I've let h2g2 know about it - but I haven't heard back yet (this is, I guess, fair enough as it is the weekend smiley - winkeye)

Aha! I've learned something new today. Thank you.

I must get over to the feedback page and thank the Hardware Gods, for they have done a Good Thing with this move. At least, I certainly notice it.

Ah, and they haven't taken the time yet to update it (typical hardware geeks, they hate to document smiley - winkeye ), so I posted to the feedback forum anyway, as you saw.

May I piggyback another question into this thread, since I started it anyway? What is the HTML code to cause a picture to link to another site when you click on it (the picture)?

They're probably having too much fun with the camerasmiley - winkeye

The HTML to link via a picture is

You can also use GuideML like this

which will put the pic in the margin as a link too.

A visitor to my homepage asked me today what the little box was. I think its where I put an xbitmap picture from my off h2g2 webpage. Because of the way this is set up I am wondering if the picture only shows if I am online. Is this possible?

It looks like the pic is set up at your site @ btinternet. This means it should be available whether you're online or not.

There's a couple of possible reasons why your visitor saw a box rather than thepic

-btinternet might have been offline/broken or slow
-the web connection between btinternet & your visitor might have been very slow
-your visitor's browser might not support xbitmap pics - you're better off with jpg or gif format pics almost all browsers can display those.

I could see the pic fine btw.
hope it helps
