hello world!
Sorry, it's habit.
Anwyay, here I am. I'm nearly 50, and I've spent nearly all that time fascinated about musical instruments, and well over half designing electronics, programming and building computers, and directing renaissance and baroque consorts. No contridictions there, eh?
I'm an American. That may seem strange, a colonist posting on a BBC site. But fortunately, music is more universal than that. I do admit that I might have been more happy if I were born in England during the time that Holborne and Dowland were active. But I'm happy enough here, where I can enjoy the fruits of their endevors along with those of all the other composers from 1450 to the present. (Yeah, ok, I like Dufay too, but I'm hopelessly in love with Renaissance and baroque music.)
I have a web site. It looks personal when you first get there, but really, it's very much devoted to Renaissance subjects, specifically: White mensural notation (the style of writing music between 1400 and 1650-or-so), Michael Praetorius (The Good Cantor!), Guido d'Arezzo (the guy credited with staff notation and the Hand of Guido, a mnemonic that made it possible to teach a monk hundreds of Chants in the time that they previously had learned 10), and organology.
Which is funny, because I hardly mention organs. Organology is the study of musical instruments. My focus on the web site is related to Praetorius' wood cuts in his Syntagma Musica, and it's worth a look.
