Hi The Thinker, I'm not aware there IS an equation. I just worked it out by trial & error

"Sorry to barge in, but I think I have an answer.
There is no common formula, just good old fashioned calculations by head. (I did write a program for it more then once but by head is just much more fun.)
1 9 8 9 8 4 (Too little)
19 89 84 (Too much)
198 9 8 4 (Balance)
-(198/9)+SQR(8^4) = 42
(-22)+(SQR(4096)) = 42
(-22)+(64) = 42
Now just report it to The Myth of 42 by Argon0 < A530560 > or any of my pages pointing to the myth
