pronounciation
Posted Jul 31, 2003
I got into an argument with a friend today about the correct way to pronounciate certain words, in particular if words like hospital and historic should have a silant H or not. I know the percieved wisdom is that Hs at the beggining of words are always sounded unless specifically stated otherwise (e.g. Hour) but I prefer to take a somewhat more liberal approach and think it quite nice to say an istoric or an ospital. I know this sounds a bit like I am putting on an accent I do not have, but it seamed more natural to me. However I did concead that for the majority of words (e.g. Hat, Hell, Hourse) it did sound a bit silly to drop the H. Can you be this selective in pronounciation? also has anybody ever heard somebody use, or do themselves, the soft th (as in think) with the work the, it seams that we all use the harder th (as in weather) but I must say, I quite like the subtler sound of the soft th.
