by Marion Zimmer Bradley is one of the best Arthurian books I´ve read. But I prefer Morgaine.

Try Stephen Lawhead- Taliesin, Merlin, Arthur, Pendragon, Grail. Absolutely brilliant.

or the first I read

Hollow Hills, Crystal Cave, Last Enchantment. by Mary Stewart.

Certainly a very good place to start.

Marion Zimmer Bradley's books in order are

The Mists Of Avalon, The Forest House,(aka Forests Of Avalon) The Lady Of Avalon, Priestess Of Avalon.

However I do find they have a feminine slant (which is no bad thing considering the usual knights' stuff) which I find a little difficult to understand, but still good. Just haven't read the new one. Not sure of the title.

There was also another series of books: Guinevere: The Summer Queen, or something similar but can't remember the Author.I believe it is a trilogy.

Also not forgetting John and Caitlin Mathews.

Sorry, to date I have over 60 books, fiction and non-fiction on Arthur etc.

My definitive book is John Morris' Age of Arthur, and film, of course, is John Boorman's 'Excalibur'

T.E White with Once and Future King (Disney's Sword in the Stone is based on this) is also a good one, although it took me ages to get into it.

BTW if anyone knows of a good modern english transcript of Mallory's 'Le Mort d'Arthur' I'd be pleased to hear from them. I've gven up on my version.

I read Mists of Avalon some ten years ago, bought originally for my daughter who was a little one then. Read all through and was very tired the day after (but anyway I was a very sleepy student during lectures ) Later I read the other Avalon books.

So you managed to get through T. E. White. I struggled to read the first book, but then I gave up.

Hi, DQ. Pleased to help. Must admit T E White wasn't read until I was in my 20's, having tried many times previously,and I THOUGHT it was a kid's book .
The other one I couldn't remember was 'Fuinevere-the Queen of the Summer Country' by Rosalind Miles, and the Bernard Cornwell trilogy. If you were interested I could give you a whole list, somr readable and some very scholarly. Depends how deep into history anyone wants to go..... Nickoli Tolstoy's Merlin is not for the faint-hearted (and no I haven't finished it)
