Hi H

There still seems to be a "discuss" button on your cleared down page so I'm just trying it to see if it allows me to post.

seems to have worked, so what's to stop you carrying on posting here?

they say that new users won't get an h2g2 space but you still seem to have one. However it might go at any time I suppose.

There are various alternatives:
1) you, Mimi & MJ are welcome to start a discussion on my personal space (I registered with h2g2 so hopefully my space will remain) - I might even contribute again tho I haven't written anything for some weeks now, not since Green Room closed

2) you could register with h2g2 and get a personal space - can use same id I think since there's no ban on duplicates - but this will mean logging out of yr R4 id and logging into yr h2g2 one so bit of a pain

3) go somewhere else - Jane and I have been using Blogger for some time instead of h2g2 to chat and it's very good: open all hours, no delays to posting, can post any pictures, not just smileys, no moderation unless you do it yourself, it can be totally private so you don't get other MB users complaining that you're secretly talking about them

4) email as a group - can send sound clips, pictures but not so easy to keep track of a conversation. It's easy to exchange email addresses, the hosts will do it for you or I can facilitate

thanks Andy

My next step was going to be to ask someone to try posting to my messages; so you've answered that question. It was only my natural politeness that stopped me from asking Peta whether they'd actually done anything other than delete our intros and messages. I'm still a little confused as to how you left me a message when I can't leave one for Mimi, apparently, until she writes an intro.

How do you register with h2g2, and what is expected of you as a contributing member? I'm really not interested in pretending to be a 'researcher' on some arcane subject just to provide a pretext for keeping the messages section open.

I actually found the idea that our conversations were in the open, but didn't impose themselves on those who aren't interested, quite attractive. In all the time we've been chatting there's only been that one rather disturbed person who thought we were a sinister clique.

I think I'll put up a rudimentary intro now and see if that enables Mimi to post to me.

back later

thanks again

H

Well, my intro seems to have been accepted and I can get to my messages via 'messages' as well as via 'conversations'. Doesn't this mean the 'loophole' is as big as it ever was for anyone who updates their intro?

don't really know what's going on to be honest, perhaps they're just stopping new MB people from having personal spaces so yours will carry on as before except it's been cleared down.

I thought that one of the reasons for the change was so that R4 moderators (in your case) wouldn't have to moderate posts to h2g2 as used to happen ie although all h2g2 posts seemed to appear in the same place, they were moderated differently, someone I was chatting to who registered with R2 kept having things removed in h2g2 because R2 is post-moderated not reactively moderated like R4

I registered originally with h2g2 long before I ever went on an MB so could use that id for the MBs - although I've never contributed anything to it, just used it as a chatroom. But hence reason I could post to you since I'm a genuine h2g2 person!!

I should just carry on as you are and see what happens, they can only remove your discussions again

I can't leave a msg on Mimi's space either since it is completely empty, yours was less so ie it still had conversations on left and the discuss button, MJ's even less so ie only discussions about her guide entry removed

seems as if the software used to clear things was inconsistent

Thanks again for all your help, Andy. I think I'll take your advice and just soldier on with my restored intro and homepage at least until I come back from holiday in mid-October. I just hope Mimi finds her way back. It won't be too bad if she has bookmarked my page or MJ's; but if she was relying on her page, there doesn't seem to be anything left there - no links to threads, no 'friends', nothing.

By the way, if you're near an HMV, I picked up this in the sale at their Oxford Street shop. It'll never be the pride of my collection but at £3.99 it's a snip.
