Its an NES emulator. I downloaded the games and they will open properly, however, I can't get the games, any of them, to actually work. I can't control them, just open them. And I know the program isn't frozen, because after a while the game kicks into a demo mode. What could it be?

This seems to me to be a problem involving the version of your emulator. yes...hmmm...you will moast likly need to remove your present application and find a newer one, I recomend you serch www.freeroms.com...yes...that should do the trick...yes...
