Sestina and what else I've been up to
aka Bel - A87832164 Started conversation Jun 1, 2009
I had never heard of a Sestina until I read about it in minorvogopoet's journal nearly three weeks ago. I looked it up and was fascinated.
It is a very special form of a poem, which follows strict rules.
Sestina comes from Latin 'sextus' meaning six.
To cut a long story short, here's a link explaining it:

It looks incredibly difficult, and that's exactly what it turned out to be when I tried to write one.
Still, it was great fun, although it took me most of yesterday afternoon.
On Saturday, we met with my parents who were on some sort of holiday not too far away, and we had a great day.
Today, we went to a village nearby to the 'Mühlenfest' - but there was no feast as the owner of the mill had had a fatal accident just a week ago, which we only found out when we arrived there. Still, the mill was open to visitors, and it was quite fascinating.
There are the remains of a small castle directly opposite the watermill, and nobody seems to know anything about it.
I'll have to return there one day and take the camera - and batteries.
Maybe I'll even find out some of the castle's history.

Thank you, MS.
I usually lead a very quiet life, with not much 'action', but it was a nice weekend (it's a bank holiday here today).

I'm busy too but with the poetry and I'll try to remember to remind you to take your camera and spare batteries next time ()

The husband took the camera, but then told me the batteries were flat.

I went to an exhibition of model mills two years ago. I could have sworn I wrote a journal about it, but I can't find it.
Anyway, here are some photos I took back then:

Years ago, we went to an outdoor museum in the Eiffel Mountains. They had mills, wind and water.
My early ancestors in America built water mills. One was known as the most honest miller in Virginia.

I think millers used to be quite well off. They had to work hard, though, and their job was dangerous.

my father bought an old windmill when i was a kid and we used it as a summer house. it was denmarks tallest windmill built out of bricks - 17 metres - and from the top you could see forever as it was built on the highest spot in town
when my father died my mother sold it and only a year later it burned down to the ground. she had been well of today if she had kept it as my father made sure it was very well insured
but such is life: some you lose and some you - lose...
looking forward to reading your sestinas, bel. all of them

One is here (A50588346), Pierce. I'm not sure there will be more, they're really difficult to write.
Shame about the windmill. Do you have photos of it?

Thank you, MS. I have to admit, though, that I only took dmitri's story and change the angle a bit and put it into the sestina form.
