I loathe having my *private* conversations highlighted on the FP, and I'm not really happy to have my journals on there, either.

As if that wasn't bad enough, it doesn't even help if you stop posting to a conversation or journal - they're listed there for days after the last post - and, to make matters even worse, the links don't lead to the conversation/journal displayed, but show you the complete message center/journal list - even the journals you have removed from your space.

No response from the eds or whoever is responsible for this resurrected (but worsened) feature from a few years ago.

Result: I'm not going to post (much) to my one-to-one conversations for the time being, in fact, I'll try to avoid it at all.

I agree. This is ruining the community, not encouraging it.

Can any of you remember when the Top 5 Convo's reappeared without announcement about a year or so ago?

That was done in error because of something being done by the Beeb.

This Top 20 seems to have turned up (again without announcement) and seems to coincide with the current 'bug' in the updating of certain Intro Pages.

You think there is a connection, lil, and that it's accidental?
Let's hope they'll sort it out soon.

I fail to see the point of it. Lil has a point, wonder if it is related to the bug thing?
I guess more people need to post in the feedback thread then to get the Eds attention?

It certainly 'works' in a very mysterious way.

I have to admit that I see nothing wrong with it.

There are no private areas of h2g2, and even message centres are not private. Some people do get annoyed if someone 'butts in' to their 'private' conversation, but I've never seen the point. If you want to chat to one person and have no-one else join in don't do it on h2g2!

If anyone think no-one else sees or reads it then they are very much mistaken.

The whole point of a personal space and message centres is exactly so people can contact you, find out more about you etc. Privacy does not exist on h2g2 - why can't people understand that and just move off if they want one to ones?

Apart from Community Threads and Journals, all conversation originate as a Message somewhere. So I can understand there cannot be a filter to sift them out.

Well, I agree up to a point. I like to have 'semi-private' convo threads. I give them as boring a title as I can think of, in the hope that other people won't bother to read them. But, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter too much if they do. However, I wouldn't like them signposted on the FP

If you had read the thread I link to in post #1 you would have seen that we are all fully aware of the 'no privacy' thing you mention, Mina. What I object to, though, is to highlight it on the FP. There is the info page for all the ers anyway. I don't see the point of displaying message centers instead of PR, for instance.

Some people only have h2g2 as a common base.
I can't load chat programmes because of my personal circumstances (trying to protect my son).
Most of this site is about the community, and we know it's available for all to see, but most Researchers here understand the concept of one-to-ones and leave well alone.
We'd not get that respect from people/newbies blundering in via the FP.

You don't need a chat programme. You can chat from your browser, if both of you have a Gmail account and your browser uses javascript.

That will work if you don't have a conversation in gmail with me....

And you can even set the conversation to 'confidential', which means it'll be gone and not saved anywhere once it's finished.

I did read it before I posted it. Everyone here ignored it, so I did too.

I just think it's ridiculous to bemoan that a site that many people are complaining is on its way out, and passed its heyday and needs more new members is now pushing the Community. After all, the Community is what helps the Edited Guide along. No Community, no EG.

Please, stop complaining that 'private' conversations are on the Front Page when we really do need more members! Especially as it does sound a bit like something is not working properly.

There are plenty of message boards that DO have private facilities, so this is not the ONLY place on the internet that can be shared by people, they just have to take ten mins to sign up to another board!

Anyway, clearly I am as unwelcome here as a newbie posting on someone's personal and private thread so I'll just blunder off.
