I love the concept of playing with words and the different meanings one can get from them.

We do have this sort of puns in German, too, but they can't be translated into English, and they're only understandable once you know the language quite well.

It's like when I went to France and we translated the wording above the train window. it translated into
Out of the window do not be putting yourself.

Dutch uses different words behind verbs that helps with confussion too

I suppose "Do Not Lean Out Of The Window" would translate into something else in French, or even Dutch

The correct French is : 'ne pas se pencher au dehors', which would be : 'do not lean out' ,or 'nicht hinauslehnen', which is something you'll find in the old trains where you still can open the windows, something you can't do in the modern trains.

Yeah well I was going back to my school days when we did school trips to France and Germany.
Give me a break, huh. I have enough trouble speaking English, let alone another countries language.

I can not remember if had that in Dutch train, because they often small windows, which only above part of the window. in Dutch trians it is not allowed stand on the couches.

I don't think you are allowed to stand on many couch roofs, mind you they do sit on them in India.

pheloxi, I think you'll hardly find a train where it is allowed.
In the old trains you were ble to open the windows down to the middle of them, so you were able to lean out.

They used to be raised and lowered by a leather strap with holes which you hooked open on a brass peg.

I do remember them I would probably have forgotten about them if you hadn't mebtioned them. AND you're wrong : it doesn't show OUR age, it only shows the age of the TRAINS

True, how very true. I can recall the excitment of going on holiday. The train journey was part of it. The steam, the smell of the burning coal. Getting black soot from them on your clothes and being moaned at by your parents.

- my uncle worked for the railway company, and we actually once did a tour on such a train - if only for a few hundred meters. The steam engines still run here in Frankfurt, on special routes and an special occasions.

Yup there's a musuem here which runs special trips for people, films and TV shows.
