No, we call them 'Weihnachtslieder', and to be honest, I still don't know what it takes for a song to be a carol, and not just a Christmas song. We don't have this differentiation here.

I was listening to Bob Dylan on radio 2 last week and he told a story that I hadn't heard before. Apparently in 1888 when Jack the Ripper was killing women in London a girl called Carol went missing. Lots of people started looking for her and were going from house to house. Everyone was frightened to open their door in case it was Jack the Ripper. To help allay the fears of the householders the searchers sang Christmas hymns to show that they were well meaning. These were songs for Carol.
They never found the girl but Carol(s), the description of songs sung outside someone's house, has stayed.
I think in Church Carols would be hymns but I think lots of Carol singers going from house to house would sing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
