h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Tonight, the fourth series of Big Brother begins on channel 4. A new batch of hopefuls will enter the house to see if they can; a. Survive, b. Win and c. Become famous for showing their backside (or more) on national tv.

The Big Brother series' are the nation's way of looking in on other people's lives. A way for ordinary people to live, by proxy, a lifestyle far removed from their own. Joining in the trials and tribulations of a group of mismatched people in order to enter some kind of fun into their lives.

It's voyeurism in a plain sense and perversion in an extreme sense. Is it good television viewing? I don't believe it is. Is it entertaining? Only in a brutal way, such as the way that a car crash can keep you occupied until you realise how sick it is to make a spectacle of such a thing. Will I watch it? Almost definately. For, as you will see, I too lead a humdrum life and I, along with millions of others, need to see that I am not alone in this life but part of a huge audience of wannabe Big Brother contestants ... Or car crash victims.
