Always good to discover another Canadian registrant...& in this case one who also shares my Ukranian heritage! There're a number of Canadians here as my friend Clio mentioned, & I notice she provided a couple 'links' too.
Feel free to click on my nickname, to visit my space & learn a bit more about me if you like. Perhaps leave me a note & I can explain my 'un-Ukranian' nickname.

I'm convinced that we're everywhere!
we can't be avoided. did you ever do any cultural stuff like Ukrainina scouts, or dncing or anything? do you speak it still?
I managed to make my way to "the old country" for 5 weeks last summer.

Ah, thats great! My cousin, now in Montreal, had also visited there. Actually I had gone to a 'school' held in our church hall to learn to read & write, but, sadly over the years (partially due to neglect, etc), not much remains. My brother though, had danced when he was younger.

That's too bad.
I just checked out your page.
Ottawa has an amazing Bluesfest and Jazz festival.
Because I work down town they happen on the front lawn of my building. I'm still trying to se if I can get a volunteer job for Bluesfest. Either way I'll be at most of it. it's great!

I also volunteer (actually, at The Yardbird Suiye, a Jazz & Blues club that I've provided a link to on my page/space. We fairly recently had a wonderful pianist, (Edmonton-born I believe, but now living in upstate New York) named John Stech - shortened I'm sure from Stechinsky. He has a great CD of solo piano, entitled 'Ukrainianism' on Justin Time Records, which nicely showcases hi Ukrainian roots.

hahaha.
I'm pretty big into the Ukrainian folk music. I'm not really into the ctual cd's as much but his pianist sounds awesome! I'll have to check him out. The folk music that I like most is when I actually learn the songs on my own and sing it with a group of people around a fire. That's actually where alot ofmy favorite memories take shape. The best was doing that in Ukraine in the Crapathians. I still get shivers and all whistfull thinking about it.

Oh, that sounds truly awesome! Certainly the stuff fond memories are made of...coincidentally, my favourite track on the disc is entitled "Carpathian Blues". To quickly borrow a part of a quote about the disc (which I've infuriatingly misplaced somehow - the CD, that is!)
"...seamless fusion of Ukrainian roots music, the American jazz tradition and Western European classical forms, 'Ukrainianism' works brilliantly."
But, am rushing off to another of my volunteer positions, http://www.terraassociation.com , I go in one afternoon a week to fold laundry & help out in the kitchen. Certainly & sincerely hope to stay in touch though, alright. Have a great afternoon.
