I'm one of the other Canadians here, I'm actually only a few blocks away from anhaga, in Edmonton. Its always good to have another Canadian onboard...can I offer offer you a or & some ...or possibly some ? You can use any of those icons (like the , , etc - & many more), Just type smileys into the search window, that'll take you to a long list of them, with easy instructions for using/creating them. And there's no need to memorize them or anything, as you can refer back to the list at any time.
Feel free to click on my underlined nickname, to visit my space if you like...certainly hope to see you around, so to speak. This's a very friendly place, I'm sure you'll become as fond of it as I have over the past few months.
Greetings Heather!

Where in Edmonton do you live (I have to admit, I don't know anhaga)? I used to live near Southgate Centre, on 113A Street and later on 112th Avenue. I lived in an apartment building that was across the street from a castle! Well, not a real one. A guy did part of his house to look like one. It even had knights and torches... and a two car garage.
I moved back to Montreal two years ago, and I really don't remember all the names of places in Edmonton, although I do remember what they look like. I haven't been back since, mainly because it's too bloody expensive to fly there!

Yes, I know what you mean about airfare. I'm just a few miles northeast of Southgate, in Old Strathcona...the area where they hold The Fringe every Aug., with all the live theatre.
I'd visited a cousin in Montreal years ago, she 's working for The Gazette. Really enjoyed going into the older section of the city for fresh bagels...I've developed a bit of a fondness for bagels since then.

I missed bagels wen I lived in Edmonton, but I found a place that carries authentic Montreal bagels from Fairmont Bagels. The Bagel Tree on Whyte Ave carries them, but they're frozen, not fresh (as you can imagine), and they're a little pricey. Well worth it, as far as I'm concerned.
I actually miss Whyte Avenue and Old Strathcona. I spent a lot of time there, because it reminded me of home. Towards the end of my time in Edmonton, I was feeling very homesick, and I'd go down there and pretend I was home.
I was very upset when they closed down Fire Eaters, which was across the street from the Farmer's Market. It was this really cool hot sauce store. My ex-roommate and I had a thing for hot sauce, and we had quite a collection going. At one point, we had 13 bottles, with such interesting names as "Scorned Woman" and "Y2K Millennium Meltdown". That one was an irridescent green. Pretty good, despite the colour.
Who is your cousin, if you don't mind my asking? I may have gone to school with her, if she went to Concordia.

Fire Eaters was a favourite of mine too. The Bagel Tree's still around. We just had a big fire here ~ it took out Albert's & 7 other businesses, including the New York Bagel Cafe.

No, I had been talking to the owner of Fire Eaters, I think it was the area's rent that did them in .

Also, about that cousin...she just married recently, not sure if she'll hyphenate the name, or take his, but, last I heard she was their entertainment editor. Or at least, 'e/e' for the weekend supplement.

I know-- I asked them about it when they were closing, and they said it was too expensive. It's too bad, because not only was it a great store, it was a great location!

Yes, it was a great location, only a few blocks from my place. So, it could easily have become a neighbourhood hangout...I didn't have the internet then, so I could've spent alot more time there...possibly more $$.
