My Bio...for now
Hello fellow travelers,
I stumbled upon this site, and was impressed with the content, so I decided to join. I finally find myself with a pinch of time. I have been communicating almost exclusively with a computer for the last 2 years, so it's time for a little human interaction!
I have been an Advertising Photographer for most of the last 20 years, but found it difficult to find steady employment when I moved back to my home town of Seattle, Washington 8 years ago. About 6 years ago I got my first computer...an Imac, and have been a Mac user ever since. I went back to school for 6 months then, and took PhotoShop, Illustrator, Quark, FreeHand, HTML, and Mac Operating Systems classes, hoping to expand into the Graphic Arts field. I had partial success getting work using Photoshop, but ended up back in Photography shortly thereafter. I was laid off from my full-time job (shooting product for the Home Depot) in January 2002, as were most people in the advertising field after the 911 attack. This was the fourth January in a row that I found myself out of work due to layoffs, so I HAD to make a change. Every time I applied for jobs, I was asked to send a link to my web site, and not to bother applying if I didn't have one. Since I had to update my web skills anyway, I decided to go back to college (again)! I am a very visual person, love design, so thought web design would be right up my alley. However, I found programming in JavaScript to be grueling, and the math involved in 3-D animation applications above my head. However, I was able to grasp Flash, and put together a little site for myself, which I am currently expanding to include ecommerce. Even though I found myself in classes with people half my age, going back to college was a great experience. I definately don't have the stamina of a 20 year old anymore!
I would more than welcome any technical advise down the road. And, when I think I can help, I'll jump in with what I can. Below is a list of some of the subjects I am most familiar with:
Professional Photography...ie. cameras, lighting, color, filters, film processing, pro digital systems etc.
Software Applications.... Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, Flash MX2004, Quark, MS Word, etc.
Coding...HTML, ActionScript 2, CSS
And below are things I've dabbled in, more or less:
Adobe Premier, PageMaker, InDesign, FinalCut Express, Filemaker Pro, MS PowerPoint, Access, Excel, Maya, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Fireworks, ColdFusion, MySQL, DHTML, XML, Video Production, Television, Audio Engineering and Radio. I started with the radio, getting my 3rd class broadcasting license in high school. My early video, television and audio engineering training was back in '77, so it's mostly ancient knowledge. Still the interest is there.
Now on a G4 Quicksilver Mac using OS 10.3.9, I keep busy but run into problems now and again. I look forward to chatting with the other artists/techie geeks out there. Hope to hear from some of you soon!
