Sorry to sound so American, but what does all these letters and order of acceptance really have to do with obtaining a higher education? Here a person has to apply to several uni's hoping to be accepted by a good one, then all that is left is the money, or lack thereof. Why does it seem that a uni is offering you grades before you ever crack a book? That just seems a bit weird to me.

hey sneaky! welcome back... let me see. Here, we apply to 6 unis. The unis make you an offer (you hope). The offer is either points of grades, from 3 a-levels. You have a first choice and a second choice (you choose these out of the replys from the unis) and then you try to get the grades to get on the course. If you miss the first choice you go for the second choice and if you miss the second choice, you go through clearing, where you ring up lots of unis and beg to be let on the course if i missed out, someone tell me!

Alright. So, just to make sure I understand (I'm occasionally impossibly dense), after applying to a uni, they send you what basically amounts to a 'you are accepted if' kind of deal and then you go bonkers trying to meet the 'if'. By this point you only have two chances (or iff's) to get into a uni without wholesale begging. That actually makes more sense than the system here where you go bonkers trying to meet the 'if' and then apply to as many uni's as it takes, suffering horrible anxiety attacks for the last two years of high school. There are also a few formalized (fill in the dot) tests that can moderate the gradings from the last four years of public education. If all that effort and anxiety pay off, there is suddenly a very large debt piled upon the student to pay for the higher education. I think a bachelors degree here costs somewhere around 30k (American dollars, I think that would still be about 20-22k British, or the equivalent of the first year's pay after uni, whichever makes the most sense), for a run of the mill uni.
Tanx for the explanation.

Yeah, thats pretty much it. Our students end up with a debt around 15thou at the end of say 3 years (is that about right?) but basically thats it.
