Allegory of Babylon
Posted Jul 31, 2003
She sits like a queen that hath never seen the ground,
She lies on a bed in a room that hath no sound,
Her face is flushed, as from agony of knowing,
she is an enigma, a silent mystery ever growing.
I loved her once in the hallowed days of yore,
I waited for her nightly on the zephyr-blown ocean shore,
I panted with longing and some nights in dread,
That I never would see a night we would wed.
But beauty is false and charm is a lie,
Illusion illusive as truth prepares to die.
A sweet voice disguises character like a cloud,
Covering truth within, as with a shroud.
She will not always loll around in luxury and ease,
Her lovers will fail her, her maids fail to please.
I will strike her with the palm of my hand,
Burning her ashes on the oft-remembered sand!

On Recovery From an Episode of Depression
Posted Mar 16, 2003
I stand on a hilltop oft overran
gazing bleakly at the bitter land
the sweat on my cheek salty-stale
oxidizing like a rusted nail
I know I've been here,
I retreated before,
I know every indentation,
Every mound on the moor
I must gird myself and advance anew
disregarding whate'er the foe may do
My cause is not hopeless, nor courage undone,
I'll emerge from darkness into the rising sun!
