Weekend
Posted Apr 14, 2003
A very... strange weekend. Had a phone call quite late on Froday night from a friend of ours to tell us that someone we knew had been killed earlier that day in a snowboarding accident in France, she was really quite upset. I knew the guy a bit, he stayed round Tess's old house a few times, but didn't really know him as well as the others. Kind of made me feel a bit upset that I wasn't feeling as sad as maybe I should have been. Also made me feel a bit shakey as he's the first person my own age I've known die, it kind of puts you in touch with your own mortality and our transient nature on this planet. We went out to meet our friends the next evening, the guys who knew him a lot better than we did and it was all a bit awkward. A jovial atomsphere of sorts to remember the good things but a strong undercurrent of grief. Arrived and didn't really know what to say to anyone, but they seemed to be coping okay though I'm a bit worried about one of them, he's had to cope with quite an unfair amount of this in the last few years.

The end of a long week...
Posted Mar 21, 2003
Things are finally beginning to look up at work. I've managed to figure out how to get one of my project aims working , haven't had any real results for quite a while now and motivation was flagging, now there another thesis chapter waiting to be uncovered. My project student has also managed to (finally) make a new rhodium complex with three weeks before he's meant to finish. The relief is almost tangible.
It's just a pity the world situation in general puts a right downer on everything. Hope this all end swiftly so my (misguided) sister doesn't end up getting involved...
