A pub seems much the best option to me, CL.
If Mrs Zoomer would like to meet us - if only to exclaim in horror in person - she would be very welcome. And if not - then that is fine too. H2G2 meets work well either way, but they definitely need more hootooers than non-hootooers or something odd happens to the dynamic, and they don't work in quite the same way. Odd and strange, but something I discovered dragging my Big Bro and a friend to the Sydney and Melbourne meets. It works, but changes things.

*nods*.. it's also very expensive, especially for someone with as limited means as myself; it's ironic that the only people who can truly afford to have a sufficiently diverse diet are those who are so embroiled in consumerism that they're unlikely to be vegan, although certain sorts of living are particularly fashionable with the metropolitan at the moment.
Having said that, I know plenty of vegans who have a wonderful diet who're on benefits. .. Perhaps I'm just missing something. Someone I used to know quite well who's vegan recently won a case in the european courts for hunt sabotage, after losing the case in the courts in the UK..

There are mountains between Calgary and Vancouver, no? And we will be in a hurry to get to all this good food, of course!
Ok, ok, so my knowledge of Canadian geography is nil, but that *will* change....

We have three major mountain ranges in BC- starting from West to East and from smallest to largest they are:
Island, Coastal, and Rockies.
The Island range is on Vancouver Island where I grew up- I know you won't get there but you are missing some spectacular places. The Coastal range is part of what I live at the base of including Whistler/Blackcomb which you might have heard of if you are a skier. Between Calgary and Vancouver?...The Rockies...ahhh the Rockies- hard to describe to someone who has not seen them. Imagine the ground, now put it on it's side and snow on top.
You will be going through one of the passes I know, so try to do so in the daytime to enjoy it. Perhaps you should install a glass roof for that part of the trip.

*lurks; muttering obsecenties and something about "being stuck in s**tty Britain" and then goes away again*

OK, but bfn, OK?
One day you'll get everything you want- but you have more time than me so don't be in a hurry!
Idaho
Saturnine Posted Feb 10, 2003
I wouldn't know how to hurry.
I shall leave you all be and not post any more. I try to bookmark, and look what happens...

Hey - so was I. I got myself work which takes me out of the UK, and then found that although I loathe the weather, deplore the politics and despise the parochial embittered provincialism of the population, that I have an atavistic and physical need to be here.
But there is no reason why a bright spark like you coudn't get work which took you abroad. Hell - travelling even without work needn't be expensive.

Ben, I could relate to your *love/hate* comments you made in your space about Britain. We love to complain, all of us about where we live and quote things like *you can never go home* but we all feel best when we are where we are *from*. I'll bet by the time you make Vanouver you will be aching to get back.

Hmmm, now that I read it that had some rather odd turns of phrase and a few dangling participles, but I assume you understand?
Idaho
a girl called Ben Posted Feb 10, 2003
Yes. I find being here very difficult, and being away from here very difficult.

Well try and keep in touch along the way. We have several shops that specialise in British goods and I know there must be others along the way. I know the last extended trip I spent in Europe I was very happy to find the Canadian Pug in Covent Garden. A few words, a bottle of Kokanee, a bite of butter tart and I was alright.
