I'm not sure either, I think you just move your character a bit to the left if you want to hit to the right and vice versa. I just run to the net each time and see what happens. Works great

I couldn't even serve without hitting the net

all you have to do is put the little yellow dot that appears on the other side of the net near the service line and let go.
