Please don't misconstrue the personal attack you received on the stretch your pennies posting as typical h2g2 banter. I was pretty taken aback by that one.
Anyway, welcome to h2g2! I'm sure you'll find much more interesting and fun folks to talk around with. Also, since you are an historian, you will probably be invaluable in adding to the collected knowledge being amassed here.

My guess is that his usual context has something to do with a sphincter muscle, but that would be playing on his field, wouldn't it?

Hmmm...yes, what a complete and utter cad that person was.
I must admit to feeling quite disturbed that Dave here, seems to equate the phrase "whacking off too much", with "sphincter" muscles and "playing on my field".
I think we'll have to keep an eye on him
