Oh no, not again! Thanks, Manda, I wondered if I'd been running around so fast that an official ACE wouldn't be able to catch up with me. I'd already made a pre-emptive strike on one of them and pounced on an unsuspecting newbie myself. Then of course there are the italics I've been pestering. Though that was only because they came to check their territories for trouble(?) as I didn't actually invade their personal lairs uninvited. Must dash... smiley - run

I have a question now that I've paused for breath. Why are you my ACE? By which I mean, is there any logic or method behind the assignment of an ACE to a newbie (even if that is only a random computer thing, scrolling buffer, drawing of lots, accidental timing of logon etc)? smiley - erm It's not that I particularly want to get rid of you (especially as replying to your message would obviously be the wrong way to _not_ attract your attention). smiley - biggrin

Hi SEF,smiley - ok

no,there is no logic or method behind the assignment of an ACE to a newbie, I do this cos I like to help people, so I just go around looking for newbies or anybody else that I think needs help,So unfortunatly you have got nobody to blame for haveing me, smiley - winkeye

I do seem to be, though it's not quite like that. I more or less joined specifically in order to be a CA. The Guru thing then seemed obvious given that I effectively already am one elsewhere. The ACE thing only happened because I'd been pouncing on abandoned newbies when no ACEs were around. Although I could be a Sub-Editor (and have elsewhere as with Guru) I don't think I'd want to do it on h2g2. Similarly I could probably be a University Field Researcher (lots of specialist subjects) but don't think I'd like the way h2g2 works. I have my own domain/site anyway for the articles, art and software I produce on a variety of subjects. I don't think they recruit Staff very often and I'm very determinedly retired now having planned it when I was 8. I know a variety of languages but the Translator scheme has been abandoned. Scout seems a bit like Sub-Editor with more running around and less control. I don't approve of real-life news so I don't get the Post or want to be a Reporter. I would only be willing to be a Sub-Ed or Uni person if h2g2 was very desperate for volunteers.

I like being an ACE, I like helping people, even in real life,

I think I would like to be a Guru one day, but I don't think I have the knowledge yet smiley - sadface

and my command of the English language is crap, so I have got no chance of any of the othere badges smiley - laughsmiley - laugh

You forgot to come up with an excuse for not becoming a Community Artist. Drawing a blank might not qualify though. smiley - winkeye

PS Since this conversation thread is on my PS rather than yours, have a look at what I've done with FORUMTHREADINTRO at the top of the page. Ideally one should be able to update to plain and click to come right back to the conversation. The ADDTHREADINTRO is what I'd like to see as a default on all conversation posting edits. Unfortunately, I can only fix ones on my own pages this way.

Hi SEF

if drawing a blank will get me a job as Community Artist, then i'm your man smiley - laughsmiley - laugh

I think that is a good idea of your putting that at the top of here smiley - ok

the only thing is, if I click on HERE >> <./>userdetails</.> it will take me to the <./>userdetails</.> page ( no supprise there smiley - smiley )

but if I click on your link at the top of this page, it takes me to the " LOST PASSWORD " page smiley - erm

it is not your link, I think it is my browser as it dose that a lot to me

I think it's partly the site. It depends whether things on the site are case sensitive or not and whether one's browser compensates. I think IE does a fair impression of compensating. This is actually quite annoying for me as I've been trying to determine what the real BBC settings are.

The site itself is not consistent in its use of case smiley - yikes and once I've successfully linked to a page then any case will get me there. smiley - erm I've only noticed failures a couple of times and have already polluted them as examples by trying other case options. I haven't kept good records and have a bad memory, so I can't remember them now. smiley - cross [with self]

Please let me know of any other examples you find which don't work, whether my links, other people's or built-in h2g2 ones. If your browser is failing to compensate for case you could be just the sniffer dog I need in my detective work. smiley - biggrin

<./>UserDetails</.> vs <./>userdetails</.>
<./>Askh2g2</.> vs <./>askh2g2</.>
<./>Online</.> vs <./>online</.>
<./>DontPanic</.> vs <./>dontpanic</.>

Hi SEF

it seems to be the Opera browser that don't like the link with lowercases

I have just tryed it with my IE browser and it went to the "Preferences" on both kinks,
but when I went back to the Opera browser, the link with the upper case letters was OK,
the link with all lowercases went to the "Lost Password" page smiley - erm

hope that makes sence

That's the other way round than you told me before. smiley - erm You said the mixed case I'd had at the top of the page dumped you in Lost Password but that your lower case ones were OK. So I changed the link at the top of the page to lower case. smiley - cross

Is it different between skins? smiley - cdouble

<./>/dna/h2g2/plain/userdetails</.>
<./>/dna/h2g2/plain/UserDetails</.>
<./>/dna/h2g2/Plain/userdetails</.>
<./>/dna/h2g2/Plain/UserDetails</.>
<./>/dna/h2g2/brunel/userdetails</.>
<./>/dna/h2g2/brunel/UserDetails</.>
<./>/dna/h2g2/Brunel/userdetails</.>
<./>/dna/h2g2/Brunel/UserDetails</.>

That'll keep you busy and I haven't even started on Alabaster etc. smiley - yikes

It is getting me confused smiley - steam

but I think it is the browser,

the first time I noticed it, I did all the erfreshing I could, and it still made no diference,

but this time, when I clicked on the links and it sent mt to the lost password page , I refreshed and then it went to the preference page smiley - erm

I will do some more testing and let you know smiley - erm
