Hey how can you reinstate a jorunal entry.
Plus is there anyway you can perminatly remove a journal entrie so no one can see it
Hello,Someone, someone's out there!
zendevil Posted Dec 27, 2002
Hello, I know what you mean!! See my own journal for a perfect example!
There DOES seem to be a way to reinstate your journal, but it's complicated, I'll find someone who's a bit more technical than me to explain it in an easy way & let you know.
Whatever happens it is NOT lost for ever! The reason you can't unsubscribe from your own journal is that other people may have added their comments before you get round to wanting to delete it.
Basically, my advice is to be even more careful when writing things in your journal space than you would be elsewhere; ie. remember everyone can read them so preview it before you post it!
Apart from this, how are you getting on on hootoo? Hope you've made some friends, have a lurk around my page any time you want & join in on anything, you're very welcome!
I'll get back to you on the journal bit ASAP
Terri

RIGHT:
At the top of your journal space, click on to where it says "Click here for more information about your journal ......etc." and then look at what it tells you to do to reinstate it.
It seems to be a fairly long & complicated process, my advice would be to print this out before you start, so you've got something to refer to.
I don't think there's any really easier way of doing it.
Are you worried that someone in particular may have read something you didn't want them to , or just generally decided you don't like what you wrote? If it's the last one , I wouldn't worry too much; journal spaces don't often get read that much unless you deliberately put something to attract peoples attention like flashing smileys!!
Good luck, let me know if this helps; if it doesn't I'll put you on to someone who knows more about the technical side of things.
Don't forget, if you get really stuck, DON'T PANIC, press the "help" button at the top of the page, or return to your Personal Space, take a deep breath & have a nice cup of !

Permanently removing a journal is not really possible I'm afraid. You can delete it from view on your space easily enough, however the act of creating a journal creates a thread (your journal entry being the first entry in the thread) and threads are easily searchable if someone wants to try hard enough.
For example if you go into one of your journal entries that are shown on your space. Then at the top of the thread you'll see navigation arrows to other journal entries (or a list of them in the laft hand frame if your preferences are set up for frames). These navigation arrows will take you through *every* journal you've written regardless of whether you've deleted it or not
There is a way of making any further journal entries you want to do almost invisible. However it is rather convoluted and requires you to set up a new account to do it. If you'ld like me to show you how, just give me a shout

had a look myself at the link mentioned by terry... they do explain how to re-instate a journal entry but am i wrong to assume that there is a need for a conversation thread on that particular journal entry?!...
as for deleting a journal entry, yep the term is a bit misleading... it will not be deleted as such but it will be put aside out of people's view... can be done by clicking at the link at the bottom of the journal i'm told...

Loup Dargent Posted Dec 27, 2002
mmmmm... i should read previous posts more carefully, the answer to my question was in greydesk's reply: a thread is automatically created when we write a journal entry...
so to re-instate a journal entry you need to find the corresponding thread [with the title of your journal entry] and re-suscribe to it...
that's how i understood the explanation in the link err explaining it...
greydesk?!...

GreyDesk Posted Dec 27, 2002
That is right loup And to find the 'deleted' journal you scroll through the list of journals that you've written as I described in my earlier post.
As for the issue of thread/journal/etc... think of it this way. Anything you post here that is not a guide entry is a posting to a thread.

I'm glad it's you two doing all this while I quietly lurk & wait for the answer to become blindingly obvious!!
A very big to you both; it really IS confusing, my next big challenge is to enter the dreaded world of Guide ML; since I have a burning desire to have a dancing alien on my page!!
Expect more pleas for help!
JOYEUX NOËL to you all!
Terri

The easy way to learn GuideML is to find someone's page that you really like and then use the "testuserpage" function. ie retype the U in the URL for their userpage with "testuserpage" and up will come the code. Then just cut and paste the code back to your own place and play with it. That's how I learnt

hi terry... it's ... i'm glad i understood the principle... sometimes reading instructions are not always enough... talking about it helps clarify things... all i've learned and am now using on my space has been through examples [on top of reading the help pages etc of course...]...
some of us learn better that way... reminds me of the teaching training i have done last year... we all have learning abilities but we all learn a different way...
the dancing alien is great BTW... had it on my space until i had to sacrifice some items due to the limited amount allowed by the digibox...
i'm now visiting my local cybercaf' on a more regular basis... that helps getting rid of that problem... but unfortunately that has brought a new kind of problem... i'm always tempted to have a look at various sites and by the time i've finished exploring them, i'm running out of time to work on my space...
that reminds me i'm supposed to visit my cybercaf tommorow/today... i _might_ do some work on my space this time...
talk soon...

Ah! I forgot, you're one of our digibox colleagues. Now perhaps you can help me here - what exactly *is* a digibox?
I understand it is something to do with internet access through your television, but how does it work? Do you have a mouse, keyboard, hardrive, USB ports? Who supplies your access? What do you pay? Is it worth it? Does it have advantages over a PC? And finally, what the heck is Leisure District?
Hello,Someone, someone's out there!
Loup Dargent Posted Dec 27, 2002
how long have you got?!...
to cut a long story short a digibox is a set-top TV provided by Telewest... as they got an interactive site we could say that it's a very limited pale imitation of internet TV... tho' hopefully in a near future they will let us surf the net... the machine, even with its limitations, can already access websites... but because of T.West putting firewalls up we can only access the bbc's ones [and dna's ones as well]... this has to do with the fact that the bbc has some interactive sites on TV interactive and that the address starts the same way eg: www.bbc.co.uk...
no advantage compared to a pc... while we have a infrared keyboard, we do not have a mouse... and the memory is very limited... if someone was suscribing to Telewest just for accessing the net [or for the moment BBCi and here] that would not be worth it financially... but as a whole package [telephone plus digital TV channels, TV emails. TV interactive and of course the added bonus of accessing this site] it's not too bad...
we pay at the moment around £45 a month but it includes the biggest package regarding TV channels and we only pay for calls to premium numbers and mobiles...
there are sockets at the back of the machine but T.West has conveniently kept quiet about their use...
we access this site through an email with a link but, as i said. hopefully soon there will be an official way to access the net through Telewest's digibox...
i would say the digibox is a good way to have a taste of what the net is about before investing into a computer...
as for leisure district it is a chat rooms site with games and a library... but it is going to be replaced, rather soon now, by a more money grabbing site... i used to quote a lot in the library... it was a good way to test ideas, theories etc on various subjects... the new site won't work the same way unfortunately...
which is a good thing that some of us found h2g2... and with the plain skin the digibox can access a lot more conversations now... so there won't be much point going on that other site... i don't go on chat anymore anyway and as the format regarding submitting quotes has changed for the new site i won't be using their forums much either...
i dunno if that explained anything really... hopefully we will be able to produce an entry soon explaining what a digibox is, all it can do and of course its limitations...
quite a lot can be done with it through TV interactive really... but it can't compete with a computer that's sure...
it's an alternative tho' especially for people like me who haven't got a computer yet...
we do moan about the machine but, at the same time we are grateful too...

Hello, Loup, Grey desk, Whatever!
I GOT MY ALIEN!! Do go & say hello to him on my page!
I wouldn't say I'm any sort of expert yet in GuideML or technology in general, but the fact thet I've achieved it at all, with an awful lot of patient friends helping me encourages me to explore further.
I totally agree with what you said about different ways of learning, personally I'm petrified of anything that seems technical or has numbers involved, as for learning French, I'm a hopeless case, can read it pretty well but pronunciation is beyond me YET I LIVE IN FRANCE!!! Poor has a lot to put up with.
I'm glad someone else asked about the digibox bit, I was meaning to do so. Not a lot of relevance for us here I'm afraid, but if anyone asks at least I'll be able to give them a general idea.
Loup, seem to remember Hati is a digibox person & also a S.A.D sufferer, someone was asking about the latter recently, but I can't find her page, do you have it?
Happy New Year/ Bonne Année!
Terri
