random feeling down
Posted Sep 9, 2003
Right, time to try and get to the bottom of this.
Every so often I feel incredibly down. No idea why. I get this massive wave of ennui. So....time to try and log it:

Let's see if there's a pattern....

Been a while
Posted Sep 9, 2003
Well it's been a fair amount of time since I last wrote anything in my journal space. I've often wondered exactly what to put down...how serious or trivial to make it...but I think I'm going for something which will veer between the extremes. As I don't write very often I end up with very long entries, but there you go.
My main piece of news is the fact that, all going well, I'm going to become a dad at the end of February. I say all going well, as once the initial elation dies down you get given all kinds of information, some of which covers those things that can go wrong. They have to give you that sort of stuff, but it can get the mind racing ahead a bit. So, at the moment I'm alternating between incredibly happy and expectant, to worried about health and responisibilities....help - it's a bit of a rollercoaster!
I'm made slightly more nervous by the helpful fact my current job contract runs out in April and there is no certainty I'll have a job to go to after that, so I've got to work hard to make sure there's an income - I really can't afford to be unemployed...

Banks and Bureaucracy
Posted Mar 10, 2003
When you get your PhD you become a doctor. Great I thought - you get to change your bank details, passport and driving licence....marvellous.
However the bank insists on seeing your certificate if you want to change your title, in the same way women taking their husbands surname after getting married have to show their marriage certificate. They were incredibly insistant on this. OK, so I did this. But...amongst other ID you can use is your passport.
Now when changing your passport you have to send off supporting documents. Well my PhD certificate wasn't getting folded up in the post, so I got a signed official copy. I took it along to the passport office - and was told that I DIDN'T NEED IT when changing my title.
So....you can change your title to doctor on your passport without ANY documentation, then get a driving licence and a bank account in that title.
On one hand you have crushing bureacracy from the bank....and on the other a whacking great loophole.
Ah well...that's life.

General Stuff
Posted Feb 28, 2003
Well the world is in a pickle and no mistake. I've decided that in order to actually get anything down in my journal it's best not to think about it, so what you, dear reader, will get can at best be described as a stream on conscience (sp?) at worst random jibberish. I hope to err on the better side of comprehension, but certainly can't promise that my grammar, spelling or state of mind will be up to much.
One other warning - I find my language tends to get more "baroque" when I'm writing, more 18th - 19th century. I really must do something about that.
Right, enough for now, there's a group meeting that I've got to go to.

A depressing day.
Posted Jan 27, 2003
Well, things are very hassled today. I've been asked to make a series of compounds, that really don't want to be made. The God of Chemistry is not smiling on me at the moment. For all those who don't believe in a god of chemistry, well I can tell you there really is one. Its the only way to explain how when repeating an experiment you know works well, it fails, then fails again and continues to fail until you want to cry and your supervisor is giving you a look which you just know means - this person is incompetant, or they lied when they said it worked before. I'm currently in this state. ARRRGGGHHH. I really, really need this to work - if only to give me some confidence in myself.
Ah well, hopefully things will improve later today.
