Gnomon - time to move on Started conversation Nov 4, 2005
Picture Venice - the glory of the Basilica; the Doge's Palace; lots of people in fancy 16th? Century costume. Music plays - an ornate piece featuring lots of narrow-bore trumpets.
What piece of music is it? It springs to mind, but I don't know the composer. It sounds too old to be Vivaldi. Possibly Monteverdi? I thought you might know.

The opening to the 1610 Vespers by Monteverdi? (Drmfs-sf-fm-mr-rd)
(Also used as the overture to Orfeo)

I actually bought a copy of the Monteverdi Vespers yesterday (after I asked this question). I think you're right.
It's the Andrew Parrot version, which I see from reviews is a lot less "grand" than the John Eliot Gardiner version. I've been listening to it all yesterday evening - it is wonderful music. Would certainly have sounded well in the Basilica.
