Hey

My name is Rachael i just wanted to know what your vies are on music sampling...do you feel it is an acceptable method of creating music? Do you feel that the copyright laws adequately encourage artist creativity in light of the use of other artists music in the creation of a new work?

Hi there, ChynalZ!

Did you find me at A971291 ? You might be better asking this question there, as you'd get a better response from other people who are really into this music copyright stuff...

I think music sampling is a great idea, and many of my favourite songs have used samples in creative ways (I mean, if even utter smiley - bleep like the Sugababes can sound reasonable with a Tubeway Army sample in their record, there's hope for us all!)...

Copyright laws are quite friendly as far as sampling and covering of records is concerned... it's totally legal at a live event, but if it's going to be sold it needs permission from the original artist (reasonable I think, as they did put the effort into writing the sample) which may or may not involve a financial agreement.

Good luck on your dissertation btw, I'm coming to the end of a degree too, and have to write a 5-9 thousand word (not much, I know) report on my project work this year (don't ask what my project was about because it's too hard to explain and incredibly boring).

I'm currently taking it easy, and just-about-coping with the absence of my better-half Nitina smiley - blue as she's visiting her parents and friends in Cyprus at the moment, but I guess I'll get on with my report sometime soon...

Make sure you stick around on this site, it's the best community on the web, and once you've written your dissertation you could always abstract it into a Guide Entry here, because we haven't got anything about music copyright at the moment (plus it would be good background to link to from my Music Sharing entry).

An ACE should formally welcome you to the site in the next couple of days, and they'll tell you exactly what to do and where to go.

See you around...

An <./>ACE</.> is an Assistant Community Editor. Basically they assist the Community Editors, Abi and Mina, (because they're not on all the time) in helping newbies on their way. Once you've written something on your personal space (which you have), an ACE should eventually come along and start a thread with a load of ideas for how to get started, and of course you can ask your ACE for other ideas.

The Gurus are people like myself who help people with the more complex stuff on the site, for example if someone posts in one of the <./>Feedback</.> forums. We're specialists in GuideML, the language the Guide is presented with, and we can help with any technical questions or directions you need.

So I guess that means you can ask me if you want something to do... the best place to start is the <./>DontPanic-Tour</.>, but somehow I suspect you've already taken that. smiley - smiley
