It's a mathematical function called a factorial. It indicates how many ways that number of thing can be ordered. So, 2! is 2 because there are two ways of ordering 2 things: 1, 2 or 2, 1. With 3 there are 6 ways etc. With 0 there is just the one way. For numbers greater than one you calculate it by multiplying the number by every number smaller than it down to 1.

Can you give me an intelligent 'sound bite' description of post modern fiction please for my interview.
I sort of know what it is, but can't find a succint description on web. The 'recipe' seems to get lost in a lot of pontificating.
Any ideas will be most appreciated.
