h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

It's that time of year again. I hate it. I'm tired & cranky. Peanut is tired & cranky. I actually had to lay her out on my lap, pin her arms with my arm and wrestle with her kicking legs to get her skirt on her this morning. Her shirt wasn't much better. I had to reach through the arm holes of the shirt, grab her hands and pull them throuh, all while praying she wouldn't remember how to take her shirt off. I skipped the socks and sent her to daycare in her faux crocs. The good news is, she quit screaming by the time she walked from the bathroom to the front door. We are *all* going to bed early tonight. And tomorrow is picture day... I could really use an adult beverage.

I hate the first few days after the spring time change, and I dion't have a cranky Peanut to get ready in the mornings. Just a cranky me.

I am not happy with this extension of DST. For one thing I also am NOT a morning person. If I'm seeing the sunrise I'm hoping it's because the party is still going on.

They try to blame it on farmers... but my granddad was a farmer and he didn't need no congressional action to tell him when the chickens and cows get up.

But the worst thing about this change is that it ruined my favourite pub question.

What is (was) the second shortest month of the year?

This would stump most people I'd ask. Being a typical pub question everyone tries to figure out the "trick" to it. They'll even wonder if it's by number of letters or the length of the days by season mistakingly thinking that days are shorter in winter. But it was a straight forward answer... February is shortest with 28(29) days. April (until congress had to screw it up) was second shortest with 29 days and 23 hours. (Except in places like Arizona that wisely don't observe DST).

I use to get a few beers off that question and they had to spoil it.

I've heard the extension was to save enery dollars. But I don't see how it saves anything when employers have to fire up the a/c and turn on the lights an hour earlier. It's just shifting the cost. Peanut was a little more reasonable this morning. It may have had something to do with having her toes painted for picture day.

It saved 1% during a study conducted in the 70's... before the information age, telecommuting and flex time. It's pointless now.

That's just ridiculous. That's before everyone and their dog had a computer at home, a computer at work, a cell phone, a pda, wireless network, etc. What is it with this administration and making policy based on bad/old science? You know that whole 'global warming' thing is hoax, right? Bah! Just let me get my sleep. I get used to the time change just in time to switch back.

You know what? I don't care which one they pick, but I would like for them to just leave the time the same all year. It was already annoying. Now it's worse than ever.

Remember when they used to say they were giving the farmers an extra hour in the fields? What nonsense. Every farmer I know works by the sun - not the clock.

I'm glad Peanut was happier this morning. Painted toenails will usually perk me up, too.
