My mother will be 50 in a couple of months and I introduced her to this site back in January.....she's completely addicted now!! 
As for help....well, there isn't really that much help I can give you when it comes to looking into conversations...
One piece of advice I can give is go have a look at <./>askh2g2</.> There are lots and lots of conversations there with most of the site "subscribed" to it (don't worry, it's free).
When I first started, I didn't know anyone from Adam, but I left a conversation in there asking if anyone had dreams of physically flying...when I got back into work after the weekend, there were so many posts it took me all morning to read them!!!
From there, I made a few friends which have grown and grown, but I have "core" friends which have helped me when I needed it.
Just lurk around, or even have a look at convo's in my personal space and contribute to those if you want to.
