Hi nerd42,

I was wondering if there's anything you know about animating GIFs you could tell me.

I know people animate them by stacking 'em but I don't know how to do that.

GIMP was a downer when I found out that open source stuff is really huge because they share one copy over a network.smiley - sadface

A friend and I wanna try and make a new kind of software that's a browserbased drawing program without any huge ugly download size for files. We could use some help though. If that sounds interesting to yeh could you jump onboard? I'm telling you about my new idea, even though it's way different from everything else I or he's ever seen on the Internet because you're my friend.

One of the features that would be key is layering. Even if I have to figure out how to reverse engineer the four options under edit for send to back, send backward, send forward and send to front for a kind of dinky version of layering, I'll try to do that.
smiley - grovel
I tried looking at flashkit like the info thing on homestarrunner says but that site's all confusing and I couldn't see the part for downloading anywhere.

smiley - flustered I just know there's got to be some kind of a way to animate things or draw okay on Windows without shelling the big bucks for a Photoshop or downloading something huge like a GIMP. smiley - skull

Can you help me?

Sure. Thanks Nerd42.
You've seen my deviant art page before right, think I showed it to you once. smiley - smiley

My biology major is starting to demand more time than it has in the past so I probably won't be able to hootoo as often as I could in the past. Yeah, definitely starting to appreciate nature and minerals as sort of God's gift to mankind kinda. smiley - winkeye

Not alot of it in the city but it's still something to look at and make things more interesting.

But if I find any gold/good stuff about gif stacking and things, then I'll for sure let you know.

So far just some vague comments from pixel artists about photoshop. There has to be a way to do it without that though. I'm almost positive. Otherwise how could the programmers and game artists draw things that moved in games before they had photoshop *shrug* you know?

Well anyways, take care,

How did you make a version of Zork? That is so awesome. I wish I knew how to make a parser. That must be tricky complicated.

MIT was where the first Zork games got made in the old days, right?
Huh.

i never made a version of zork. dunno what you're talking about. google's excellent for finding different ways to paly it though. there's even a way you can play it with a computer over the telephone with speech recognition software called ZoIP. haven't got it to work myself yet though

Oh. Well... I kind of seem to remember one where it had "Aargain" falls as a location instead of 'Aragain'.

I'm starting to learn a little bit how to do things using Flash.

The main turn down/off is sticker shock at the price though.

I'm starting to think my best bet toward getting version 8 now that everybody's pushing CS3 so hard... might be at getting a CD-O for one or two hundred less. They don't seem to have 8 kicking around that much anymore. Or if they do... I'm noticing it sold at even higher prices than the one I found in a store when I did find a copy.

Nerd42, what kinds of programming and computer what do you call those, "applications" do you like to do? Which part of comp-sci is it that you're interested in.

I'm starting to think that maybe I might want to minor in computer science. They're increasingly tying into biology and medicine now, more and more. Everything, even cars keep getting computerized with some parts over time.

So I figure maybe it would be about time that I tried to get a bit of a deeper understanding than I already have on some of that.

Besides, I wanna invent stuff. smiley - laughsmiley - laugh You know?

I don't know... life's been sort of stale lately, and making things helps give me some kind of a sense of purpose I guess. A different kind of a sense of purpose than helping people or doing community service, but still a kind of a sense of purpose.

The other day I was reading about telecommunications ports. Sort of a who owned what kind of a thing, or at least that named a chunk of the known ones and some of the registered ones, some of the private ones... and a couple of the defunct ones. I bet people don't use port 70 so much anymore for example. smiley - winkeye

mostly i'm interested in server-side coding. it'd be really cool if someday, I got to write web sites like this one for a living. i don't know very much about how to do it yet though, but I've seen what can be done. Also, with awesome companies like Google in the market for server-side coding experts, it will hopefully mean that sometime I can pursue this interest and also make money at it. (hopefully. LOL)

but, like Leonardo DaVincii, I have trouble finishing projects. I'll start one and then get distracted or accidentally lose it or something. most of the stuff I've started is uncompleted. One cool thing I've gotten into that actually got finished is in computer music. I produced a Linkin Park fan remix mixtape last year called cOOLdISC_aFTERmATH. (lol, i had the capslock on the wrong way when I first typed it but the name stuck. it dropped in April, do a google search for "DJ_Nerd42" and you'll be sure to find it) I'm working on a second one in my spare time that's going be of a much higher quality.

um, also I'm interested in machinima. (ya know, like Red Vs Blue n stuff - take a video game's 3d engine and use it as a film-making 3d engine instead of a as game) i did finish a little bit of crap in Quake 1 but nothing good enough to release publicly.

oh and another thing. if you can't afford to buy Flash, then you can install and uninstall the demo a bunch of times or there's always piracy ... smiley - pirate

oh, and yet another thing. about "aargain falls" ... um, Aargain is a friend of mine who signed up to play this game one time and his suggestions have been very helpful in forming the silver sword universe. you might say he was one of the original designers of the fantasy universe the silver sword game is based on.

as far as the Zorkish thing I created - i think you might be thinking of the areas I created on ifMUD several years back. http://ifmud.port4000.com/

Oh, okay. Thanks Nerd42.

Heh, you & me both.

We're kind of like... modern day Renaissance men in that regard or those aspects sort of.

You know how to make electronic/digital music? Totally smiley - cool.

The parts I'm interested in are animations and some day I'd like to delve a bit more earnestly into programming languages. Being able to take a shortcut or redirect what you're having a machine do when it gets stuck in a loop or runs into an error feels like "user empowerment" kind of to me.

I found a cool open source piece of free 3D animation & modeling software yesterday called Anim8tor and when I'm done taking my 2D course I'm going to explore around doing some things using that for awhile.

You're right on the Flash. I found some places that have software in bulk a bit like retail outlets where you can buy it at a discount but for now the bargain hunt still continues.

Oh, and thanks for the chat. smiley - biggrin

I wonder... have you ever heard of like this thing called Protools for Mac? A friend of mine is looking for something like it but for PC. She and I are going to try and maybe make a little movie next year for one of our city's short-film festivals. Not sure what to have it be about yet but she wants to help me edit. smiley - laugh

I tried reaching you via e-mail but you didn't recognize me and that's alright too I suppose.
