Join the dark side and get MSN. Its WAYYY better than anything else, because I've been brainwashed to believe that.

IRC is different from instant messaging. You pick a server and a topic and discuss things in a group of people you don't know from around the world, instead of picking buddies and talking to them about whatever. It's alot better than the chatrooms of Yahoo and MSN, mostly because there are alot more intelligent people there, and stupid people get kicked off if they spam or act like jerks or whatever.

Hmm... I'll stick to MSN and people I know, thanks. As it is, I only have one person on my list who I've never met, and she's a sort of penpal.

oh ok IRC isn't like ... for meeting people. it's just for sharing information and stuff

Turns out the penpal was a strange, disturbed individual. Contact interrupted on a permanent basis. I prefer to know who I'm talking to, and I use the web for information transfer.

You don't have my email address by talking to me here. Theoretically, were you someone who sold information to companies, you can't give them a h2g2 U number and hope to achieve anything.

Oh, LOL, you don't need to reveal your email address to talk on IRC: that's another advantage.

Why not get an anonymous-type email address using a pen name? That's what I did. (My mother didn't name me Nerd42)
