Hi Dr Nick!

Not quite a doctor yet! Got my time at med school first (not to study but to drink so much that in my drunken state working in the NHS seems like a good idea!). Geology eh? I know that'll cover rocks but does it cover volcanoes and earthquakes and all the exciting stuff? Where you thinking of studying? Keep in touch!
P.S. Stargate is pretty cool (and futurama cracks me up every time!)

Well, first I gotta pass my Alevels, but if and when that momentous event occurs, theres a course at Leicester I really like the look of - MGeology with Palaeontology. And yes, it does include earthquakes and volcanoes and stuff. (field trips to the Canary islands to watch volcanoes)
A sci-fi fan! I like Babylon 5 too, but SG-1 has to be the best!
Hows all your studies going?

Hi Dr Nick!
Dr Nick Posted Oct 1, 2002
Never really watched Babylon 5. Like SG1, liked some of the Star Treks (mostly DS9) and think that Star Wars is pretty cool (I used to be a huge fan when I was around 13).
Trips to Canary Islands? Not bad. I've got to think of exotic places that my studies can take me. I get an elective in my fourth year where I can go overseas but that's a long way off yet. Might try to go to the US or Canada.
Studies comprise of finishing off my reading list before they ask me anything on it! OK, I confess, I've only read about 50 pages of the 900 page epic textbook that I was told to get. It's all about physics and now I'm wishing that I did that at A level. Mind you, looking at the stuff in the textbook it may have driven me insane (OK, driven me MORE insane).
Since you mentioned Paelaeontology I can't help but laugh at all those jokes on Friends about Ross and his dinosaurs! I'm sure that won't happen to you (just make sure you don't watch Jurassic Park all the time!). What A levels do you need to do that? I've heard that Leicester is a pretty cool place. Never been there tho...

Well, I'm doing Art+Design, Geology and Biology. Thats the 2 science subjects taken care of. But they want at least 3 Cs, But I've been predicted AAD (the d is in biology)
Physics. I'm glad I didn't take that! It was hard enough at GCSE. I really should do some of the bio-reading, but I just can't be bothered
Hi Dr Nick!
Dr Nick Posted Oct 1, 2002
I tried to do some bio-reading but then I realised how boring some of the stuff is. Started to read "The Selfish Gene" but I found that after a couple of chapters I wanted to destroy the book and erase it from my memory forever. One of my favourites was "The Double Helix" because it went on about other things apart from biology from time to time! So, my advice is to leave bio-reading well alone! (I'm hoping that attitute is shared when they ask me about my reading!)
I didn't know you could do an A-level in geology (and I should really know since I spent my summer working in admissions in a sixth form college!). Any good? I would never have been any good at art+design, my drawings don't look anything like the real thing. I try to pass it off as surrealism rather than admitting their just cr*p...
Hi Dr Nick!
Smilodon Posted Oct 2, 2002
Luton sixth form is one of the biggest, so it does loadz more subjects than other colleges, which is why we're lucky enough to have geology.
With art+design, it helps to be more 'modern' and 'surreal', my art teacher seems to like that. Unfortunately, I don't, I prefer pictures that look real. He even has the nerve to criticize my favourite artist(David Shepherd).
Well I don't have biology again till 2morow. But I've lost half my notes, which I need for the investigation we're doing, Oh its all so confuzing
Hi Dr Nick!
Dr Nick Posted Oct 3, 2002
Wouldn't worry. It was only this summer that I found half the notes I would have helped with my A-levels. They were stashed away in a draw where I thought I would remember them. Shame I didn't have them back in June but there you go. It was a lot more fun making stuff up in an exam (if I didn't know the answer I at least tried to make the examiner laugh).
Perhaps I might be able to get away with art with your teacher then. Unfortunately, my pictures bear no resemblance to what is in front of me, so you wouldn't like them. What did David Shepherd paint pictures of? (I thought it best to own up to my ignorance on this one).
You can get through any science practical by drawing lots of graphs, using technical terms (even if there not relevant) and making ridiculous conclusions. Someone I know once put down that the plant didn't grow in dark conditions because the lack of sunlight made it sad. We found it funny, but the teacher didn't see the same funny side of it. Hope it all goes OK. What are you doing anyway? Let me know how it goes.
Whoo-hoo! Term starts on sat! Today is meant to be my last chance packing day but I'm blatantly going to spend it hanging round h2g2! I'm always in favour of last minute packing (cramming it in a rucksack) anyway...

David Shepherd paints pictures of tigers and elephants for his charity. Loveley pics but all my teacher can say is, 'that bloke who paints animals'
The investigation is about stinging nettles We have to spand a whole afternoon doing it, when I could be at home
Hi Dr Nick!
Dr Nick Posted Oct 3, 2002
When I was a young and carefree 7 year old I slipped whilst going up a tall hill and ended up in a large patch of stinging nettles. It hurt, but then I was little, so got up and kept on running around without a care in the world. Several morals to this story:
1. Don't fall down a hill into stinging nettles.
2. If you are going to land in a bunch of stinging nettles be a 7 year old who has his mind on more important things (like avoiding being tagged or finding a good ghiding place).
Keep that in mind and have lotsa fun (even if you could be at home basking in the sunshine like me!)

Well, half way there, but I have Bio now, and I don't understand a WORD of it
Hi Dr Nick!
Dr Nick Posted Oct 3, 2002
You're at the last hurdle Just mention respiration (doesn't matter what it's about, it will make it look good). I never really understood a word of it and I managed to get by. Haven't been found out yet...
Hi Dr Nick!
Smilodon Posted Oct 4, 2002
Thanx for the tips
Thankfully theres no bio today, I hope alls well at uni. I still have to write my personal statement, but I don't know what to write
Hi Dr Nick!
Dr Nick Posted Oct 4, 2002
Neither did I when I wrote mine. Only peice of advice I can give is to promote yourself whilst being honest. That sounds a bit weird. Tell them why they should take you and why you want to go there and do the subject but don't make stuff up. Lots of horror stories about people making things up then being rumbled! If you say you're a great fan of Beethoven they might ask you about it!
Not to worry you though!
Hi Dr Nick!
Smilodon Posted Oct 7, 2002
Well, we've got this booklet thing now to help us write it. Still haven't started, but I'm thuinking. But I'm so modest I can't just go singing my own praises, I just !
Hi Dr Nick!
Dr Nick Posted Oct 11, 2002
You'll do fine. My personal statement was really forced and I got away with it!
Uni's great! Hope all's well with you.
Hi Dr Nick!
Smilodon Posted Oct 14, 2002
Well, I have a cold now i think its because I spent saturday out in the rain collecting nettles...
Hi Dr Nick!
Dr Nick Posted Oct 14, 2002
Well, whatever turns you on...
Get well soon. You'll have to wait a couple of years before I can be a doctor and treat you!
