Hi! Welcome to h2g2! My name is Amy, and I'm an ACE (or assistant community editor) here at the Guide. We ACEs are the meeters-greeters of the site, real people who take time to greet every new researcher personally! We also help new researchers (newbies) with anything they need, and generally help to make this place friendly! We normally do so by posting lots of links... so hold tight... there's a bunch but they're all pretty useful...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/Aces - the ACE homepage. This is a great place to get a general h2g2 question answered if I'm not around.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/Gurus - the Guru homepage. I'm also a part of this volunteer scheme - the Gurus are the all-knowing researchers who simply know this site probably better than the back of their hand. Ask here (or any Guru for that matter) if you've got a more technically-oriented question.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/Smiley - some sites make do with simple text smilies, some have one or two of the little yellow guys... but we've got a whole *page* devoted to them! Check them out!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/thepost - The Post is h2g2's official newspaper - which comes out every Thursday (Thing). Check here for general news, some really interesting articles, and some cartoons.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/askh2g2 - ever had a question (on ANY subject) that you've never had answered? This is the best place to ask it!
A632431 - A place that's been around as long as h2g2 has can often create its own language. We have, and though it may not be very complex, we have a lot of our own idioms and phrases and vocabulary and so forth that often go right over the heads of new researchers - so go here to catch up quickly!
My favorite thing about h2g2 is the community - and we've got a club for every interest. A660304 is a great resource for almost every club and organization and pub and random bunch of people here. Check it out - or even check out my user page (U50994) for the kinds of things I'm into.
Please don't be afraid to jump into conversations. I know this place can seem a bit daunting at times, but we're really friendly. The fact that we all seem to be going 60 miles a minute is because this place is so friendly and full of wonderful people who've created wonderful friendships with others.
If there's anything you need - help with one thing or another or you just want to chat - let me know by either replying to this message or by leaving me a note on my personal space. Enjoy! And I hope to see you around sometime!

Thanks for the hello!
I wandered in by accident and was intrigued. As an engineering student, I haven't flexed my creative writing skills in quite some time, so I thought this might be a good time to refresh and try some new ideas out.
I'll be sure to wander about and get familiarized with things here - thanks for the links to the places most useful to a newbie like myself.
I'll make sure to look you up if I have any questions.
~Matthew

I find that engineers often make very interesting writers - I'd love to see some stuff that you write!
Hope you're enjoying looking around... it snagged me 3 years ago and I haven't left yet... (I wonder how that happened? ).
