6ths' Chemistry Masterclass On 6th February a group of five pupils and Dr Blackmore were invited for a day at St Andrew's Chemistry department. The day started with an interesting lecture by Professor Naismith on 'Fighting Bacteria in the 12st century', which included the university's own work on carbohydrate antimicrobial drugs. The rest of the morning was occupied by labwork where groups synthesised paracetamol, sulfanilamide, hexaphenylbenzene and an azo dye. An extensive lunch was provided. After lunch we performed the characterisation of our products using St Andrews' IR, NMR and mass spectrometry facilities. Thanks to Dr Botting of St Andrews for organising the day.
