I've just gotten myself a copy of this book: http://tinyurl.com/6mxzoq . Have you read it?

One of the local PBS stations (the major one not affiliated with any college) ran a "marathon" of documentaries about different foods and their histories, and referenced this book. I've enjoyed similar books about the history of the spice trade and about salt, so I thought this would be nice, too.

(They also had a doc about chocolate that day, too, but I don't recall them referencing any books)

No actually I haven't read that, I may have to borrow it from Transcend Coffee's 'library' - http://www.transcendcoffeeblog.com .

Coincidence that you mention smiley - choc, I had noticed a couple of histories among the cookbooks at The Cocoa Room( http://www.kerstinschocolates.com & click on 'News & Events).

Oh yes, an afterthought.*sigh*I finally saw it tonight, due to one smiley - bleepin' major TV & ISP SNAFU at the time - but if you go to the Transcend site http://www.transcendcoffee.com then scroll down to 'Transcend Coffee Featured on City TV' & click on 'What's Eating Theo', you'll see a short news story on a favourite hangout....hmm, that I haven't been to in all too long! Shameless plug, but it's a cozy, Quality shop, with personable/knowledgeable staff.
