Going "bowling"
Posted Dec 4, 2003
Well, the UMIST LGB society had the idea of going bowling - we know the Uni of Manchester LGB went on Monday, but we had the idea first! Anyway, yesterday evening saw me drive three LGB committee members down to the Mega Bowl in Parrs Wood (a little bit stressful, but we got there OK). When we and the others got there, we discovered that all the lanes were taken until about three hours later! Apparently, both the treasurer (James) and events organiser (Maz) said "we don't need to book any lanes on a Wednesday evening". However, since the UMIST LGB still had money to spend, we all decided to have a meal at Pizza Hut - although James pointed out he could only pay for £9 per person (well, when is a treasurer not tight-fisted? I should know, as I am one! ). So we all had pizza (surprise, surprise), lots of ice-cream and Pepsi Max refills. After that, I went home as I had to put the car to bed - I'll find out what the others did later!

Balls
Posted Nov 28, 2003
Before I start, this is not a reference to football, rugby or any other sport! No, what's happened so far is that I've finally met another h2g2 researcher (in the form of HonestIago) face-to-face and he suggested that I go to the LGB Christmas Ball. Now, I was already thinking about going and I thought it was on the Sunday after I finish a theatre show week (playing piano in the band), when I would be free. Unfortunately, it turned out that it was a day later *and* I had already agreed to go to a dinner for my research group (weeks ago). So I was trying to see if I could get a ticket for the ball without the dinner, but it was getting rather difficult to organise. Finally, I emailed the organiser of the meal (who had requested our choices for the three courses), telling him that I was double-booked that evening, and he suggested that I could withdraw from the dinner. So I did, and now *I can go to the ball*! That's also a possible line in the theatre production I'm doing, as it's based on the Cinderella story!
But they're not the only balls I have had to content with - reading British Standards on electrical installation safety are another form. However, I've also found out that my field tests in Canada will probably be as late as March, so I might not be able to play in the Gilbert and Sullivan production this year - b****r!! Still, you can't win them all, I suppose ....

Updating my introduction
Posted Nov 18, 2003
Hmmm .... it's been a long, long time since I wrote the introduction here and badly needs updating! For example, I'm now 22, I've done my chemical engineering degree and I'm doing an engineering doctorate (still at UMIST, though). I've also joined even more orchestras, read other things etc.
Some things are still valid, though - I still haven't written a guide entry! And I didn't mention anything to do with my personal life: although I don't particularly want to shout about it, perhaps saying I'm gay and linking to M2M2 would be a good idea? (It can't do any harm and who knows - someone might actually leave a message!)
So yeah .... I think I'll be updating this thing as soon as I get some time.
