There is a Taoist story of an old farmer who had worked
his crops for many years. One day his only horse ran away.
Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to share his sorrow.
"Such bad luck," they said.
The farmer replied, "Good news, Bad news - just the same."
The next morning the horse returned,
bringing with it three other wild horses.
"How wonderful," the neighbors exclaimed.
"Good news, Bad news - just the same," replied the old man.
The following day, his son tried to ride one of
the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg.
The neighbors again came to offer their sympathies at his misfortune.
"Good news, Bad news - just the same," answered the farmer.
The day after, military officials came to the village to
draft young men into the army. Seeing that the
son's leg was broken, they passed him by.
The neighbors congratulated
the farmer on how well things had turned out.
"Good news, Bad news - just the same," said the farmer

I love that story too Abbi! It makes you think long and hard about the things you have labeled good and bad in your life.

None of you know me, but I thought I'd pop in anyway.
My favourite Koan is the one about the monk. Aren't they all, though?
This monk's been chased off a cliff by rabid animals. Species varies. So he's chased off this cliff, but just over the edge he manages to catch hold of a clump of strawberries with both hands. If he delays, he'll fall, if he climbs, he'll be eaten, if he falls, he dies. What does he do? He eats the strawberries.
