Courtenay
Posted Jun 18, 2003
Well, I seem to have come through remarkably unconfused. Dido and Aeneas was very successful creatively, but less so financially, as the audiences who troop in regularly if 'Verdi' or 'Mozart' are billed decided to stay away this time. More fool them, as I think we had our best audience reaction to this show.
Courtenay rehearsals now occupy my thoughts, particularly as I am one of four men in the climatic battle sequence with sung and/or spoken lines, which will mark my first solo work to a paying audience since 1996... I have had characters in some of the operas, but only silent ones which I have played in addition to singing in the chorus. I am rather excited!
The music for Courtenay is seriously growing on me, and I wish there was a cast recording available for me to buy. We have a CD of the backing music, which is useful for learning purposes, but I'd like a recording of the show as well.
Once the run is over, I may consider working on a guide entry about Courtenay - either the musical or the man that it's based on.

Is it May already?

Well, I'm now in the process of rehearsing TWO shows! Dido and Aeneas to be performed at the Gulbenkian Theatre in Canterbury (June) and a musical called Courtenay to be performed in Canterbury's Marlowe Theatre and Sevenoaks' Shed Theatre in July. I'm bound to get somewhat confused before too long...
The best thing that happened to me recently? Seeing two little ducklings on the college pond. Aaaaahhhh. Sweet.

Oops!

Just realised I haven't added a journal entry in a while...
I got in to the opera, and am now busy rehearsing the music.
This'll be my fourth year as a chorus member for the opera. Always a truly mad experience, but well worth it.
Anyone in the Canterbury area in the first week of June, come along! Gulbenkian Theatre - 'The Ephesian Matron'/'Dido and Aeneas'

Not as much doom as I thought

The audition went very well and I now await news of my fate.
Meanwhile, here on h2g2, my super-heroic alter ego (the Dewey Demon) has been captured, but has not yet been desposited in any particular forum, which is a bit of a problem, as he's now stuck in r.p. limbo.

Doom...

I have an audition tomorrow morning - eek! I hate auditions with a passion - I'm fine on stage (I expect it's all that spare adrenaline) but auditions are evil, evil things... Maybe I should add them to my list of pet hates.
It's for a baroque opera double bill, but the people auditioning can sing any song (as long as it's in English) so I've picked one I'm comfortabel with. It's not too flashy, but it's better to pick something you're familiar and get it right, than something flashy and mess it up.
Fingers crossed (and heart sinking rapidly down towards Australia)
