A Non-Dewey Question

Being the Dewey Demon as you have so ably proved, I'm sure you can answer at least part of my question. My school has a wonderful library with lots of books that I'm dying to read, but the entire library is organized in a system different from the Dewey. The nonfiction I don't mind, because if I wanted a book on a certain subject I could look up the subject. But there's something strange about the fiction that makes it hard to browse. I kind of have to look for a specific book, because the fiction I want to read is intermixed with other stuff written about that fiction, some of it in other languages. Most of the books I look up are in PQ or PR ____.__, but I have so far failed to see a pattern that might make it a little easier to predict. What other system is this and how is it organized? This is driving me crazy!

It's the Library of Congress system and it confuses me immensely!
It's pretty much ordered in chronological sequences, so Chaucer comes before Shakespeare comes before Fielding comes before Austen and so on, but the exact periods are a little difficult to understand (i.e. I don't really have a clue!). Then it should be organised alphabetically by author within each historical period.
Sorry I can't be more help than that - I expect there are web site about it, but the prospect of looking at them scares me!

No, I don't need another website. Thanks! That makes (some) sense now. Now I can actually see the pattern.
