Reading
Forty years ago I was introduced to the writings of P.D.Ouspensky, which in itself is was an introduction to the teachings and life of G.I.Gurdjieff. I am still reading and searching for more input on Gurdjieff's remarkable life. Very briefly it could be said that the two men were truth seekers and their meeting was almost accidental.
Ouspensky was a Russian philosopher and mathematician. Gurdjieff was a Caucasian mystic. The culmination of their joint work was the foundation of a system of personal psychology through what was described as "the work" and schools [not in the formal sense] which where set up in the early 20th century in London,Sussex and Buckinghamshire. The latter was actually in the 50's set up by B Pogson who was herself a pupil of Dr Maurice Nichol, himself a student of Gurdjieff. I will discontinue the dialouge for now and if any interested party's wish to add to my limited knowledge I will be pleased. The following is a list of the books on my shelves.
The Fourth Dimension. A New Model of the Universe. In search of the Miraculous. All written by P.D.Ouspensky.
Ouspensky The Unsung Genius - J.H.Reyner
Gurdjieff,The Anatomy of a Myth - James Moore
The Work Life - Beryl Pogson
The Unknowable Gurdjieff - Margaret Anderson
Our life with Mr Gurdjieff - Thomas & Olga de Hartmann
A Further Record [Extracts from meetings 1928 - 1945 -P.D.Ouspensky.
Gurdjieff's autobiographical book "Meetings with remarkable men" was made into a film in 1979. I have a video copy. Finally is the major work of Gurdjieff's, Beelzebub's Tales to his Grandson.
Still in the reading mode, I would recommend "Embers" by Sandor Marai,
beautifully translated by Carol Brown Janeway. It has left a lasting impression of human involvement, passion and loyalty.
