The Muses were nine sister goddesses, from Greek mythology, each of whom was regarded as the protectress of a different art or science. They were daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (Goddess of Memory) and they are Calliope - muse of epic poetry (parchment roll or tablet) Clio - muse of history (partially opened scroll) Erato - muse of love poetry (small lyre) Euterpe - muse of music and lyric poetry (double flute) Melpomene - muse of tragedy (tragic mask) Polyhymnia - muse of hymns and sacred music (veiled figure) Terpsichore - muse of dance (lyre) Thalia - muse of comedy (comic mask) Urania - muse of astronomy (rod in one hand and a globe in the other)Muses later came to represent creative thought, being both the protectresses and inspiration.
