If you were impeached and removed, I have a feeling I'd be the Gerald Ford of h2g2 politics.
I'll be involved to whatever extent is needed, but right now I'd like to see how it develops on its own. As for the basics, you're intending for fresh (or at least previously unseen on h2g2 and otherwise unpublished) pieces of writing to be submitted?

You are much admired in many circles here, my friend. You'd be warmly welcomed, I'm sure. I don't know about Buck, though. What happened to him?
You asked how to attract new members. I assumed you meant people who will write for the EG. So I asked myself what we could do to get potential writers interested in the site. This is all I could think of. So, yes, I think it should be never before submitted articles. Fresh writing. Whether or not it is limited to new researchers or open to anyone on site needs to be determined.

Buck's probably off roaming a verdant field somewhere.
Okay, good. I wasn't only thinking about the EG, though. In the case of a writing contest, it could help the UG and other community aspects just as much.
I think it should be open to anyone, but that newer writers should be given a preference. And of course the judges would have to be excluded. You, Waz and Pin would make excellent non-EG judges, though Pin would be a suitable choice for either EG or non-EG. There are lots of fine choices for EG judges.

We could have 3 categories instead of 2. Make the third category for newbies only. This way they won't be competing with some well-established writers on site.

Yeah. That's not a bad idea.
I'm pleased to see others contributing prizes and stuff. I have lots of books I could part with. A few PG Wodehouse collections would be fairly DNA-esque. I don't really have, um, any money at all, though.

What I want to avoid is having the contest co-opted. The difficulty with an open site is that it is open.
Let me tell you a sad story. I have a Friends of the Library group. All very nice people. But they have their own agenda. Let's say I have an idea for a library program. I get the outline of the event worked out and then call the Friends and ask them to supply $100 for an ad in the local paper and 3 people as volunteers to pass out punch and cookies. Within a day, they have scheduled a "meeting" to discuss the plans. Within 3 days they have completely reorganized the event so that it has absolutely no resemblance to the original idea and doesn't accomplish what I want it to acomplish. Then it is advertised as a Friends of the Library event and the library becomes a bit player in their movie.
This has happened so often that I now refuse to work with them. When I have a library event, I do it myself. This has made me paranoid.

Well, I don't know who would co-opt the contest. I mean, the whole idea is that the site is stagnant I think, so there aren't any lively go-getters who would try to take over.
By the way, I don't think you should include a word limit on entries.

Okay, sorry I scared off ST in the Prizes thread. I really couldn't resist. He's completely unhinged, in my experience. I don't think you would want him involved. I promise not to distract the rest of your threads with my bickering (though I did have some valid points, I feel )

I'm afraid his tirade was more aimed at me, that comment about 'track record'. Sadly, some folks will listen to a tale of woe, and let it become a crusade for them. Hyp is fully aware of circumstances and 'players'. I am not so shallow, have offered to help how-ever I can, and I will stick with it.

Hey Nick (though I see you've unsubscribed)
No, I feel quite certain the "track record" thing was aimed at me, because I described his view as paranoid (is there any other word for his attitude in that post?). We've had some confrontations in the past. He likes to vaguely bring up my track record.
You should feel free to stay subscribed to this conversation and participate if you choose. I doubt Hyp would have any objections.

I don't know ST, so won't venture a guess as to which one of you he meant. I do know both of you quite well and value your opinions. Sniping at my friends is not a good way for anyone to endear themselves to me. I did find the suggestion he made rather odd. If you have a computer you have access to Amazon. They are worldwide with distributrion warehouses in many countries. How could we get any prize from any source to the winners without an address of some kind?
