h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

It’s been one of those days at the old WCPL and I’m stuck here another 5 hours, complete with headache. I’ve managed to get payroll done and the utilities paid, both fairly quick tasks that shouldn’t take over an hour. It stretched to nearly three because of constant interruptions. Working here often requires extreme levels of multi-tasking. It would be so nice to be able to start and finish a task at one sitting.

The good news is that everyone is pleased with their paychecks today. I managed to get the personnel committee to give them all a raise and surprised them with it. The bad news is that B, my circ supervisor, has cancer that has spread to two bronchial tubes and several lymph nodes.She will be starting on chemo soon. We're already short staffed. The scheduling is going to be tricky. B has a lot of sick leave and vacation both accumulated, which is good for her peace of mind. But as long as I'm paying her full wages, I can't afford to hand out a lot of overtime to other staff members, let alone replace her. We're hoping she'll be able to come back, but she is so terribly thin that I don't see how she will tolerate the chemo enough for it to do much good. There's always something to worry about, isn't there?
