Blue is this ( {--------} ) long...
As I sit here and stare at this blank screen, all I can think about is the question: "If you were flying over the desert and the left rear wheel of your canoe fell off, could you use Belgian waffles to shingle your doghouse?" As you can see, thinking about such weighty matters leaves little room in my head for thinking of things to write about here. I'll muddle through somehow, I'm sure.
My cat just told me, in no uncertain terms, that it's darn well time for a new flea collar. I'm off work tomorrow, so I'll add that to the list.
Ah, well. I guess I could start by introducing myself. Hi. I'm Lissa, pleased to meet you. :) I'm in my mid-twenties and I live with a cat and a really great Joe. He makes me laugh (and he's the one who introduced me to questions like the one above). My really great Joe - one day I'll write an Ode to Joe and you can all read it. I think it's enough for now for you to know that he's a wonderful guy who loves me (and I love him) and he does the laundry.
I'm an American, a Southern one, particularly. My heritage is Latvian (which I am proud of) and, as I found out a couple of months ago, Canadian. That'll take some getting used to. I'm a country girl at heart, as I grew up in the woods. I like snakes. And I had a couple of Madagascan Hissing Cockroaches as pets (got them from a beloved college professor of mine).
I currently work at a large corporate bookstore, even though I have a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology (emphasis ecology and particularly interested in conservation). I plan to go to graduate school when I get completely fed up with the retail life and the customers. You'd think that people who frequent bookstores would be moderately intelligent. Let me tell you...wait, I probably shouldn't, really. :) I read a lot. Working in a bookstore definitely has its advantages (like the employee discount and the fact that we can check out hardcovers with dust jackets as long as we keep them in saleable condition). I'm currently reading 'The Salmon of Doubt' by Douglas Adams (which, of course, is where I found out about this site). My favorite genre is the fantasy side of Science Fiction&Fantasy. Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, Katherine Forsythe, Piers Anthony, Douglas Adams, Spider Robinson, Andre Norton, Lynn Abbey & Robert Asprin (their Thieves' World especially), and so many others. Also I like to read fiction (Daniel Quinn's 'Ishmael', 'My Ishmael', 'The Story of B'), nature/biology ('The Botany of Desire' - I forget the author - argh), erotica ('adult' fairy tales especially), myths and fairy tales (anything edited by Jane Yolen, and Robin McKinley's stuff), and so much more.
And now for the religious history of Lissa... I grew up in an almost completely non-religious house. Which, looking back, I think is great, for lots of reasons (not the least of which that it left me very openminded). I didn't know anything about this Jesus guy til about second grade, when someone explained Christmas (which my family had celebrated, just in a totally secular way). In high school, my best friend tried her darndest to get me to be Baptist - I only hung onto that for about 2 years, mostly to please her. And I had my agnostic phase. Then I discovered Paganism. Which fit well with my worldview and my interest in all things of nature. So now I describe myself as your average everyday solitary eclectic pagan. "An it harm none, do as you will."
Here's a handy Latvian phrase: "Ludzu atnes man vienu alu." It means, "Please get me one beer." It's pronounced just as it's written.
I have a purple couch.
By the way, I ramble.
Carpe Noctem (and have loads of fun during the day, too)

It's now 8/4/02, 12:45am - It only took me an hour or so. I'm really not good at math and I'm really surprised I was able to make my Researcher number equal 42 all by myself with no help (no lie!!). I was never real good at math. But here goes (if it's wrong, please tell me!)...
My Researcher # is 199812
(19+(9-8)+1)*2 = 42
I am excited!! (My Joe can testify to that!)
