Hi nutsn....

couldn't agree more about long names ... I did time in the AUStralian army years age (national service, vietnam & all that) & anyone with an unpronounceable name full of Zs, Ys, Ks &cetera was referred to as "wheelbarrow"
nicknames were rife & I ended up with "nutsn" given that my name bears a strong phonetic resemblance to "bolts" ... hence nutsn from nuts 'n bolts
"manda" sounds cool: what is it? truncation of "amanda"?
like the reference to "guide-dogs" ... I've the feeling that this h2g2 space is huge & a white stick would come in handy
one thing to arose my curiosity is "guideML" ... what does it mean?
while I've got the white-cane tapping about, what's the ettiquette in h2g2 about identity & anonymity? ... I mean its fine by me to be shrowded in the nom de guerre "nutsn" but the vibe suggests a potential to "get personal" ... is it just a "consenting adults thing or what
are you anywhere close in physical space to Marylebone? ... I've a daughter waitressing her way around UK & Europe in company with one of her "Hilton" mates: they're shacked up in the shadows of Lords, within pi*sin* distance of Abbey Road it seems - the lass has walked THAT pedestrian crossing
she's given occasional weather reports but they' still rather breathless & "american in paris"
its getting on toward the witching-hour here so I'll get on the move
Hi nutsn....
manda1111 Posted Jul 27, 2002
Hi again nutsn, nice to here from you again ,I live about 120 miles from Marylebone so I dont get there very often, but as look would have it we went to a H2G2 get together last weekend and I did go to Marylebone, you never know I might have bumped into her and never know.
My name is made up from my initial "M" and my parterners initial "A",so you get "M and A" =MandA.
As for the GuideML it is the markup language of H2G2,if you click on my name at the top of this posting it will take you to my page, then you can see the sort of thing you can do with it, if you want to put any picturs on your page you have to use GuideML, if you press the "EDIT PAGE" button on your own page,at the bottom you will see "Plain text, GuideML" put a dot in the GuildML spot and then click on the "CHANGE STYLE" button,
click on this >> <./>GuideML-Clinic</.> it will show you how to use it.
As for the ettiquette of H2G2, We have all ages here on H2G2,so I would say that apart from reading
the >> <./>HouseRules</.> dont say anything you would not want you 10 year old Daughter to here,
As for the anonymity of the site, everthing you write on H2G2 everone else can read, and on your own page you can write as much or as little about your self as you like
I hope I have covered everything you asked,If not or you want to know something else or just want to chat then just yell and i will get back to you

thankyou "maam" ... liked the roots of you H2G2 name: the result is (superficially) gender specific but given its derivation, it could be androgonous
actually, following up on the anonymity thing I notice from just sniffing around that people are quite up front about personal data - also it seems you lot in the sceptred isles meet in physical space ... cool
pls don't construe this as a fishing expedition ... I love the language and screwing around with it
while on the subject of screwing around, read a book recently called "on good turn" (a natural history of the screwDriver): it was conceived as one of those turn of the millenium pieces for New York Times ... it prosecuted the thesis of the screwdriver being the tool of the millenium - facinating stuff
I'm orfff - thanks for the guide-dog stuff

hi manda - how's things in the Old Dart
I've just changed skin to GOO ... glacial maan
a thing to catck my eye was the circular thingee @ top-left of the screen: its reminiscent of tatoo's adorning lovely young thins' lumbar spine or shoulder with hints of the yin & yang symbol ... does it mean anything or is it just another ancient celtic bitt of gear
cheers, JB

mmmm ... the search for meaning can be taken to far sometimes
(my tae kwon-do master keeps saying "don't analyse it, just execute the movement")
reminds of a story about (Richleu and Metternich - ? spelling) foreign ministers of Bourbon and Hapsburg empires ... I think they were going around in pre french revolution europe ... one of them died before t'other and the survivor is reported as wondering "why did he do that"
"brunel" skin ? no but I'll give it a shot now
another prosaic riposte for the deep & meaningful can be found in speculation about what Abraham Lincon might be doing if he were alive today ... scratching madly at the lid of his coffin
I'm off ... cheers, JB

to much searching for meaning makes my head hurt ,
so I let the others do that, while I go down the pub ,
well it sounds good to me

took a swing at brunel skin this <noon & came back to GOOOOOO ... the it seemed rather "industrial" in contrast to the organic feel of gooo (if organic's possible on the flat screem of a lapTop)
anyway, that's my story & I'm sticking to it
on reflection I have to say your taking refuge from "meaning" in the pub seems a contradiction of Adams' "42" thesis (there I go again, why did he do that?) ... aside from the social & sexual opportunities you're on a hiding to nothing: I mean: stay @ home pondering meaning and risk the danger of a head-ache or hit the boozer and risk a hang-over
mexican stand-off ... bu**ered if know
actually, now that I see the notions of industial & organic together I'm reminded of the art-work HR Giger did in the alien movies ... now there's a synergy
[how do you get those "smiling & scowling" faces into your text and is there a spell-check about (or are typos tolerated)]
cheers, JB

manda1111 Posted Sep 27, 2002
As for Brunel, I dont like it either, but as it is goint to be the defult skin and i am going to be asked about it, I thought I had better get used to it
As for Adams "42" I must addmit I do not know him
all I can say is that if it a toss up bettween staying at home and pondering the meaning of life (on my own, being board, and no way on earth coming up with the answer )OR going down the pub with friends haveing a laugh and haveing all the sexual ( I have a very good wife so that dont count )and social opportunities ,and both will give me a in the morning.
no contest
as for the smilys just click on this number >> A155909 or click on any smily that you see like this one >> it will take you to the smily page, pick the smily that you want and put it in and it will turn in to a smily
and no there is no spell checker so typos are tolerated and sometimes expected
speak to you soon

adams' "42"

adams' "42" isn't a person ... its the answer to the question about the meaning oflife, the universe & everything
at least that's what Douglas Adams had the (then) greatest computer ever constructed come up with in (forget which) one element of the hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy trilogy ... actually, that scene is a classic bit of theatre irrestective of the medium - radio, TV or hardCopy - its performed in
you're right about there being no contest between solitary navel-gazing and "sinking a pint" in company ... one suspects the answer might be closer at hand with booze addled synapses
enoug, enough ... life's a bitch and then you die
adams' "42"
nutsn Posted Oct 3, 2002
that is classic riposte to "life's a bitch ... "
is it an original ? - if so, give up your day job !!
[why didn't I think of that]
adams' "42"
manda1111 Posted Oct 3, 2002
It is an original
I am full of then
( well I've been told I am full of something, I hope its that )
but nobody will pay to hear them
looks like I'm stuck with my day job
