Melbourne
Posted Jul 24, 2002
Today is my last day in Melbourne. I love it (despite the fact that the winter weather here is almost as cold as it is back home) and am quite sad to leave. My bus leaves at 7.30 in the morning which is going to be a struggle as I am not, by nature, an early riser.
An important things to note about Melbourne are that you can't simply walk down the road and find a decent pub, you have to be taken places by people who are "in the know". This is because they are hidden down little back streets without lights or signs above them. Generally anywhere that has flashing lights outside it after 7pm is a closed photograph development shop. And that is not a joke. You should also note that Melbourne is often called the four season city and this is because, although there may be lorious sunshine when you get up in the morning, the chances are that a bitter wind will suddenly appear from nowhere, followed by squally showers and then frost. Do not attempt to wander around in shorts and vest tops and make sure you have an strong umbrella handy that doesn't easily get blown inside out.
Do go shopping. The CBD, Chapel street, Acland Street in St Kilda, these are all places where you can find the best and most stylish clothes in the world, forget, New York and Paris. Melbourne isn't just the shopping capital of Australia, it is the shopping capital of the universe!
