Hiya Luke,

You should definitely try to save up and get out here. It's fab. Although I would advise avoiding the south coast between April and August. It's freezing. Nobody mentioned it was going to be cold in Australia. I've had to buy warm clothes and seem to spend half the time dodging the rain. So much for my rucksack full of shorts and vest tops!! Today had a high of 8 degrees. Apart from that, however, it's lovely. And the wine is relatively cheap too which is always a bonus.

I've mainly been in the cities which are pretty much like big cities back home. In fact, Melbourne reminds me a lot of Manchester. One of the biggest problems though is trying to find somewhere to go for a drink. Don't get me wrong, there are loads of really cool pubs, bars and clubs. Unfortunately, they're all down little back streets with no lights or anything to let you know thay're actually there. You tend to find that the places with flashing lights outside are closed photo development shops!

The people generally are a lot friendlier than back home. Strangers stop you in the street if they overhear your accent and tell you really good places to go - and that's when they're sober too.

There is one very disconcerting habit that Australians have, however. They don't say "Hello", they say "How're you going?", but this is not intended as a question and if you try and answer them and say something like "Fine, thanks, how are you?" they look blankly at you or simply walk away. It takes some getting used to.

Things in general are a lot cheaper than back home. But then, Britain is probably the one of the most expensive places to live anyway. However, the banks are thieves. In fact, don't even get me started on Australian banks. I suddenly forgive my bank back home for everything!! Out here they charge you for the priviledge of taking your own money out of your own bank account from a hole in the wall belonging to your own bank AND they charge you even more if you go into the branch to withdraw money. Sorry, for ranting, but it is a little bit of a sore point at the mo. They withdraw $5 (about 2 pounds) at the beginning of the month just so that you can use your card. And you have no choice in it. Anyway, I'll stop now before I really get annoyed.

So where would you like to visit if you ever get out here?
