I think I agree with you on that. I don't like pictures taken of me, but I love to have pictures of my friends. For me, looking at pictures jump-starts my memory. When it's tangible there's less chance of me forgetting it, so if someone says remember this... and has a picutre I'm much more likely to know what they're talking about.
does that make any sense?

I particularly enjoy finding pictures in my room (it's kinda messy right now) of things like camp from last summer, two years ago. It's fun to look at them again.
